Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) | University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia offers its Four-Year Doctoral Fellowship. This program supports outstanding domestic and international PhD students. Effective September 2026, funding covers up to four years in total. It provides stable, base-level support throughout doctoral studies. Applications happen automatically through UBC’s graduate admissions process.

Special Funding Rules

  • Vanier and Tri-Agency scholarship holders automatically qualify
  • These students receive 4YF funding once external awards end
  • Support continues until four years post-award or the fifth year
  • Canadian and permanent resident holders must reapply for Tri-Agency funding annually
  • International holders aren’t required to reapply, but may compete for higher awards
