Trainee teachers to start feeding themselves from May 8

From May 8, 2022, Trainee Teachers across all Teacher Training Institutions will not be fed. This comes after a directive was issued by the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education – Ghana.

According to them, the decision was taken as a result of the Government’s inability to settle trainee teachers feeding areas for six months.

PRINCOF in a statement has mentioned that suppliers of food to the various teacher training institution has threatened to stop supplying food to them. In the statement, the suppliers stated emphatically that they will only supply goods when all areas have been settled.

For this reason, the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education – Ghana, (PRINCOF) has also come out with a feeding plan for trainee teachers.

The new measures taken are as follows:

  1. Teacher trainees will be provided with only two meals, breakfast, and supper. This will continue for one week. From 23rd April to 30th April 2022.
  2. After that, Trainee teachers will be given only lunch from 1st May to 8th May 2022
  3. Then on May 8, trainee teachers would be asked to provide their own meals. This will continue until their feeding allowances have been paid.
  4. Food vendors are being encouraged to increase the number of meals they cook daily for sale to students.

In the statement of PRINCOF, this is to ensure that there’s no break in academic activities.

Jonathan Dzunu, president of the Teacher Training Association of Ghana (TTAG) has indicated that they will not accept the current happenings. According to him the leadership of the student body will resist all attempts to deny them their meals. In his view the directive from PRINCOF is unacceptable.

He continued by saying that Principals of Teacher Training institutions have taken the decision mainly because the feeding component they have now does not contain allowances.

He is of the opinion that the situation should be solved since students cannot starve whiles studying.
