POSITION: Communications Assistant

Scope of Work

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ghana collaborates with government, civil society, and the private sector to promote sustainable development and inclusive growth, aiming to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Environment and Climate Cluster (ECC) within UNDP Ghana focuses on transformative climate and environmental initiatives. It helps build resilience to climate change, supports circular economy solutions, and engages in global carbon markets, while aligning with the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and low-carbon development goals.

Range of Tasks

The Communication Assistant will report directly to the Communications Analyst and act as the main communications officer overseeing all communication and visibility initiatives for the AWD and Waste-to-Compost projects. The officer will report to both the Programme Specialist, who is also the Head of Environment and Climate (ECC), and will collaborate closely with the Climate Change Programme Analyst, project teams, field staff, and government partners.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning for Communication

  • Create and execute communication plans for the AWD and Waste-to-Compost initiatives in accordance with UNDP branding and visibility standards.
  • Create and manage a communications calendar that highlights important milestones and visibility prospects.

Content Creation & Narrative Building

  • Produce captivating materials such as press announcements, human-interest narratives, blog entries, impact summaries, and videos highlighting project results and the experiences of farmers and beneficiaries.
  • Assist in recording insights gained, effective methods, and new ideas arising from both projects.

Interactivity in Digital Platforms & Social Networking

  • Manage the creation of social media content for posting on UNDP Ghana and its partners’ platforms.
  • Track and document media exposure and online interaction pertaining to project initiatives.

Media and Stakeholder Involvement

  • Collaborate with media outlets to guarantee thorough coverage of project events and achievements.
  • Coordinate media briefings, site visits, and prominent launch or outreach events.

Knowledge Management and Visibility Solutions

  • Create awareness and educational resources like brochures, flyers, infographics, and video documentaries

Required Qualification and Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Development Studies, Environmental Studies, or a similar discipline. A master’s degree is beneficial.

Experience:

At least 1 year of experience in communications and public involvement, ideally in sectors related to development, climate change, or agriculture.

Essential abilities

  • Background collaborating with local communities, non-governmental organizations, and governmental bodies.
  • Profound knowledge of community involvement principles, human rights, and protection policies.

Preferred abilities

  • Demonstrated capacity to collaborate and build effective relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders (government, private sector, financial entities, civil society, etc.).
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation abilities, along with management and organizational talents.
  • Comprehension of the Ghanaian agricultural landscape, especially the rice industry.
  • Having experience with UNDP or other UN organizations is beneficial
