Your Impact: The Crane Rigger Role
As a Crane Rigger, you will play a critical role in our mining operations. Your primary mission is to execute safe and efficient lifting operations. You will rig and direct crane operators of various sizes, strictly adhering to OEM guidelines and load specifications. Your expertise will ensure the safe movement of plant and equipment. Moreover, you will verify that all rigging activities comply with established safety protocols and conduct basic maintenance on rigging gear to maximize operational effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
As part of our team, you will take ownership of the following areas:
Crane Rigging and Lifting Operations:
- Ensure Safety First: You will guarantee all lifting operations occur safely and in full compliance with site rules and regulations.
- Select Correct Equipment: You will choose rigging gear with the proper Working Load Limit (WLL) or Safe Working Load (SWL) suitable for each specific load and lift method.
- Maintain Load Stability: You will identify each load’s weight and center of gravity to prevent tipping or uncontrolled movements during lifts.
- Apply Proper Techniques: You will use correct hitches, angles, and connections to avoid overloading equipment and rigging gear.
- Communicate Clearly: You will maintain clear and effective communication with crane operators using standard hand signals or radios.
- Follow Lift Plans: You will strictly comply with approved lift plans, permits, and procedures, especially during critical lifts.
- Control Suspended Loads: You will use taglines and maintain safe positioning to control swing and rotation of suspended loads.
- Identify Hazards: You will proactively identify risks such as overhead obstructions, adverse weather conditions, unsafe drop zones, and personnel exposure.
- Care for Equipment: You will maintain, properly store, and promptly report any defective rigging equipment.
Maintenance and Repair Duties:
- Conduct Daily Inspections: You will perform visual inspections of slings, shackles, hooks, wire ropes, chains, and lifting beams, checking for wear, cracks, corrosion, deformation, or broken strands before each use.
- Clean Rigging Gear: You will remove dirt, grease, chemicals, and mud that could cause damage or weaken rigging equipment.
- Perform Minor Repairs: You will carry out approved minor repairs only, such as replacing tags, shackle pins, or protective sleeves.
- Quarantine Defective Gear: You will immediately remove defective equipment from service, tag it clearly as “DO NOT USE,” and report the damage.
- Maintain Records: You will keep accurate inspection and maintenance records as required by the company and legal standards.
- Coordinate Repairs: You will send damaged slings or lifting gear to approved vendors for professional testing or repair.
- Ensure Compliance: You will follow all applicable standards, including OSHA, ISO, BS, ASME, LOLER, and local regulations.
Health and Safety Management:
- Apply Safety Systems: You will deliver your outcomes by applying Newmont’s Health, Safety, and Environment systems and protocols.
- Inspect for Risks: You will inspect equipment to identify any basic risks before commencing work.
- Participate in Meetings: You will attend daily morning safety meetings to stay aligned with team goals and safety updates.
Your Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist
Formal Qualifications:
- You must hold a valid Crane Rigger certification or license.
- A MINCOM Rigger certificate of competence is advantageous.
Additional Knowledge:
- You should understand maintenance principles and industry standards.
- Knowledge of work management processes is required.
- Familiarity with crane operation and rigging standards is essential.
Experience:
A minimum of four years of crane rigging experience in a mining plant or similar heavy industrial environment is required.
Technical Skills:
- Strong problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills for team collaboration.
- Ability to calibrate cranes for correct lifting using load cells.
- Experience operating crawler cranes and RBT cranes for lifting heavy equipment.
- Proficiency in operating overhead hoists for lifting heavy equipment around the mill area, such as motors, pinions, and gearboxes.
