Teach in England if you qualified outside the UK

You can work as a teacher in England even if you got your training outside of the UK. This advice is for people who were not born in the UK but became teachers outside of the UK.

If you want to teach in England, you’ll need:

• The right visa or status
• teaching skills and experience you can show an employer
• to pass criminal and professional safeguarding checks (these will be organised by your employer)

One of the following could be the right visa or status:

• a right to work in the UK already, such as settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme or indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
• a job offer that lets you apply for a skilled worker visa.
• Eligibility for another type of visa.

Irish people who want to work or live in the UK do not need a visa.

It also helps a lot to have:

• a certificate to teach (this can be from your own or another non-UK country)
• English “status as a qualified teacher” (QTS)

Applying to become a qualified teacher (QTS)

Qualified teacher status, or QTS, is the professional status that English teachers get when they finish their training.

Without QTS, teachers who got their training outside of the UK can work in English schools for up to 4 years. But getting QTS will make it easier for you to find work as a teacher and move up in your career.

This is due to:

• When the 4-year exemption period is over, QTS is required by law in many English state-maintained schools.
• In all English schools, QTS is used to judge the quality of candidates for teaching jobs.

How to Apply and Teach in England if you qualified outside the UK

Depending on where you got your teacher training, you may be able to apply for QTS from the Teaching Regulation Agency.
