Job Summary
The Ministry of Social Services puts money into things that will help people, like income support, services for children and families, help for people with disabilities, and cheap housing. We help people build better lives for themselves by giving them the tools they need to be financially independent, build strong families, and build strong community groups.
The Ministry of Social Services’ Community Living Service Delivery branch helps people with intellectual disabilities get access to a range of community-based services. CLSD staff work to make sure that people with intellectual disabilities have their physical, emotional, and social needs met and that they can live as independently as possible in their own communities.
The Opportunity
As a Community Services Worker for the North Service Area in the North Battleford office, we need someone who is energetic, caring, and committed to helping people in our community. In this role, you will support and empower the community to help people with intellectual disabilities live more independently and take part in their communities more fully. You will also have the chance to do work that is deeply meaningful and has a big impact on the lives of people and families in need.
Responsibilities
In this position, you’ll:
- Manage a caseload of clients, including assessment, individual program planning, counseling of individuals and/or families, referral and follow-up to residential, day program, or other service systems, and crisis intervention;
- Monitor, review, and solve problems with CBOs and approved private service homes, as well as offer advice and teach the public;
- Apply the right social work methods to the implementation of divisional programs in the region. The main goal is to get people with intellectual disabilities back into the community, keep them there, and make it better.
- You will be in charge of keeping an eye on the work of new social workers and practicum students.
Requirements
If you are the right person for the job, you will:
- Know about, respect, and understand the beliefs, values, and points of view of different cultures, with a focus on First Nations and Métis;
- Know about diversity, poverty, systemic, socio-economic, and other social issues and how they affect people;
- Know about the principles, practices, theories, and intervention strategies of social work;
- Have the ability to stay calm in times of conflict or stress and be able to treat clients with respect;
- Have the ability to plan and carry out interviews with people who have a wide range of skills in order to gather and evaluate relevant information, assess risk factors, family dynamics, and the need for services; and
- Understand, interpret, apply, and follow rules, policies, and laws like the Saskatchewan Assistance Act, the Saskatchewan Assured Income for Disability/Saskatchewan Income Support program policy, the Child Care Subsidy, Saskatchewan Employment Supplement, Saskatchewan Rental Housing Supplement, and others.
- The skills needed for this job can be learned in school or through work experience related to Human Services. Usually, education, such as a bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Indigenous Social Work, or a similar field, and experience in a similar field.
