Prioritizing and streamlining Skills Assessment for the Construction Industry in Australia
The Australian Government aims to address the current housing shortage crisis in the country by extending invitations to applicants in the construction industry. They have plans to expedite the skill assessment process in construction trades. The Trade Recognition Authority (TRA) has collaborated with representatives from the construction industry to expedite the skills assessment process for specific occupations.
The announcement made on May 8, 2024, by the Hon. Brendan O’Connor MP, Minister for Skills and Training, emphasized prioritizing and streamlining skills assessments for construction industry-related occupations.
This project is a significant part of the 2024–25 Budget Program. This initiative aims to address the pressing demand in the Australian housing construction industry by empowering migrants to contribute their skills and expertise.
Initiatives by TRA to prioritize skills assessment for the construction industry
TRA has implemented several initiatives to prioritize and streamline skill assessments for construction industry occupations.
- Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) has announced its commitment to expediting the processing of approximately 2,600 skills assessments in specific construction trades within the next two years.
- In addition, TRA will expedite skill evaluations for approximately 1,900 prospective immigrants from countries with similar qualifications who are interested in working in Australia’s building and housing industries.

- Beginning on July 1, 2024, TRA implemented a new policy to give priority to skills assessments for occupations in the construction industry. The assessment programs of TRA that were assigned with this job of fast processing include:
- Provisional Skills Assessment
- Program for Job Readiness
- Migration Skills Assessment (MSA)
- There is no need for migrants to apply for prioritization. Relevant applications will be automatically identified by TRA based on the occupation selected during registration.
Offshore Skill Assessment Program
The Trade Recognition Authority has decided to eliminate the compulsory criteria for the Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP). This program offers candidates the opportunity to apply for a simplified and more affordable Migration Skills Assessment (MSA).
It will also help candidates who may not have the necessary qualifications. In addition, individuals have the option to apply for the Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP).
