New Visa Rules for Foreign Workers and Students to Japan

New Visa Rules for Foreign Workers and Students to Japan

Japan has announced a new, easier way for highly skilled foreign professionals to get work visas.

Last week, the Japanese Immigration Services Agency said it would give special treatment to people who meet certain requirements, such as having a monthly salary of 20 million yen ($151,000) and a master’s degree. The government says that foreign candidates will also be able to work in the country for up to 5 years.

The goal of the new strategy is to bring highly skilled professionals to Japan, which is known as one of the best places for technologists to find work. Foreign workers and students who want to work or go to school in Japan should gain from the change.

Three Categories of Work for Highly Skilled Professional Visa

A five-year highly skilled professional visa may be given to people who meet certain requirements in three types of work. These are the three types of work:

  • Research at a high level
  • Advanced specialized or technical tasks
  • Advanced business and management activities

Applicants with a master’s degree or higher and an annual income of more than 20 million yen or with a work history of 10 years or more and an annual income of more than 20 million yen can get a five-year visa for advanced academic study or advanced specialized/technical activities. The method based on points will stay the same.

For advanced business and management tasks, you need at least five years of work experience and an annual income of at least 40 million yen. This means that you can get a five-year visa if you meet these requirements.

Permanent Visa Eligibility

Those who meet the simplified requirements and get five-year visas will be able to get a permanent visa after only one year in Japan. On the other hand, people who already have a visa must live in Japan for three years before they can apply for a permanent visa.

Criticism of Points-Based System

Although criticized for being too hard, the Japanese government’s points-based visa system for highly trained workers has helped find qualified candidates. The shortened visa process should help skilled workers work in Japan.

The measure is intended to boost Japan’s economy, which is struggling due to a labor shortage, and facilitate cultural exchange
