POSITION: Process Mechanical Technician

About This Role:

To improve plant processes and production, mechanical equipment and systems must be safely troubleshooted, replaced, repaired, tested, and maintained under mechanical regulations and requirements.

In this role, you will

Health, Safety, and Environment

  • Deliver specified outcomes and/or support services using Newmont’s Health, Safety, and Environment systems, policies, and protocols.
  • Maintain general housekeeping of the tools used.
  • Participate in regular (daily) safety leadership initiatives.
  • Ensure that safety criteria are met.
  • Remove any mechanical faults that could pose a safety risk.
  • Contribute and attend all safety meetings.

Mechanical Maintenance

  • Execute mechanical maintenance jobs to completion based on schedules supplied by the Mechanical Supervisor.
  • Identify, resolve, and fix any mechanical problems or defects in equipment.
  • Troubleshoot technical and/or operational issues.
  • Conduct in-depth examinations of defects that affect equipment operation and process flow.
  • Perform routine maintenance on all mechanical equipment under approved maintenance guidelines.
  • Perform additional maintenance duties, such as predictive and preventative mechanical maintenance.
  • Use hand tools, portable electrical tools, and maintenance shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Read and use precision measurement tools.
  • Attend to mechanical failures.
  • Identify broken mechanical parts and repair or replace them as necessary.
  • Overhaul the gyratory, MMD oxide, and cone crushers, as well as their accessories.
  • Conduct an inspection and overhaul of the rock breaker.
  • All relevant shift information should be reported and recorded in logbooks.
  • Work with the Mechanical Supervisor to ensure that the Process Plant’s mechanical performance remains optimal.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects to help improve the performance of the Akyem Process Plant operation.
  • Contribute to the creation of standard task procedures (STP).
  • Maintain an understanding of the monthly production targets and progress.
  • Strive to minimise downtime and expenditures.

Reporting

  • Keep records of maintenance and repair work.
  • Compile field observation reports and incorporate the results into weekly or biweekly planning.
  • Prepare daily reports reflecting the jobs performed for the day and submit them to the Mechanical Supervisor.

Solutions Analysis

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical equipment for emergency repairs, and do visual inspections with instruction.
  • Determine whether to repair or replace machines.
  • Analyse specified problems and challenges to determine the best technological solutions within OEM requirements and local standards.

Work Schedule and Allocation

  • Achieve work objectives by creating your own daily work and prioritization schedule.
  • Coordinate with support services and delegate short-term duties to other technicians as needed.
  • Respond to questions and directions professionally.

Your Training, Skills, and Experience Checklist

Formal qualifications (including professional registrations):

  • Mechanical engineering diploma or certification.

Additional Knowledge

  • Understanding of maintenance principles and industry norms.
  • Understanding of the workflow management process.
  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling.
  • Sound understanding of portable hand and power tools.

Experience

  • A minimum of three years experience in a mining process plant or a similar setting.

Technical Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Good computer literacy abilities (SAP, MS Word, Outlook, and other Windows apps).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely with foremen, maintenance personnel, other operators, and professional staff.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, inspect bearing tolerances, and use precision measurement instruments.
  • Ability to handle mill motor change-outs, as well as bearings during overhaul.
  • Ability to detect and report problems using technical terminology for equipment parts.
  • Ability to successfully depressurize all hydraulic units and perform maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to mend vibrating screens and hack screen deck rails.
  • Have experience with gyratory, MMD Sizer, and cone crusher maintenance.
