Job Offer at Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture
Consultancy Opportunity: Rice Post-Harvest Processing Expert
Do you eat, sleep, and breathe rice value chains? Can you take complex technical concepts and translate them into simple pictures that a farmer with low literacy can understand instantly? If you combine deep post-harvest expertise with a talent for clear communication, then the Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture (KITA) wants to hear from you.
KITA stands at the forefront of agricultural development in Ghana. Consequently, they are seeking a highly skilled Consultant to develop a game-changing resource for smallholder farmers. This is not a stuffy academic paper. Instead, it is a practical, visual, and inclusive fact sheet designed to empower farmers, youth, women, and persons with disabilities.
If you believe that knowledge should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their literacy level, this is your perfect assignment.
Job Purpose
The consultant will create one (1) user-friendly, gender-responsive, and inclusive technical fact sheet. This resource will target smallholder farmers, with special emphasis on accessibility for persons with low literacy. Specifically, you will address the real-world constraints of rice processing without a combined harvester. Think mini threshers, mini mills, and practical solutions that work in the field.
Moreover, you will align every piece of content with Ghana’s post-harvest management policies and the Ghana Standard Authority’s quality benchmarks. To enhance learning, you will incorporate practical checklists, visual aids like diagrams and icons, and clear “DOs and DON’Ts.”
Here is exactly what you will deliver:
- One Print-Ready Fact Sheet: High-resolution PDF format, ready for distribution.
- One Web-Optimized Version: Lightweight and accessible for online viewing.
- Editable Source Files: So KITA can update and adapt the content in the future.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The consultant will take ownership of the entire content development process. Here is the breakdown:
- Conduct a Desk Review: You will analyze existing Ghanaian rice processing materials, MoFA extension guides, and relevant AGRA project documents.
- Collaborate with KITA: You will work closely with the KITA technical team. Consequently, your content will align perfectly with project milestones and quality objectives.
- Cover Critical Stages: Your fact sheet must address the following stages for low-mechanized systems:
- Harvesting: Maturity testing (visual and moisture-based), manual and simple mechanized cutting techniques, field bundling, handling, and pre-threshing preparation.
- Threshing: Pre-threshing conditioning like sun-drying panicles, mini-thresher calibration including speed control, and immediate winnowing practices.
- Drying: Best practices for sun-drying, including target moisture content testing.
- Storage: Temporary storage protocols that prevent moisture re-absorption and pest infestation.
- Milling: Pre-cleaning and destoning requirements, grain conditioning and tempering, and mini-mill settings to maximize head rice yield.
- Integrate Key Messaging: You will weave in AGRA’s branding, safeguarding policies, and gender-inclusive messaging throughout the fact sheet.
- Submit and Revise: You will deliver a draft for review. Then, based on feedback from KITA and relevant stakeholders, you will finalize the document.
Qualifications and Experience
KITA needs a consultant who combines technical depth with creative communication skills. You must understand rice, but you must also understand people.
Your Qualifications:
- Expertise: You possess proven experience in post-harvest management, agricultural mechanization, or agricultural extension. Specifically, you have worked within the rice value chain in Ghana or West Africa.
- Education: You hold an advanced degree (MSc, PhD, or MPH) in Agricultural Engineering, Post-Harvest Technology, Agribusiness, or a related field.
- Experience: You have a minimum of 3 years developing training materials, manuals, or fact sheets for smallholder farmer-focused projects. Crucially, you have demonstrated the ability to simplify technical content for low-literacy audiences.
- Language: You are fluent in English. Additionally, knowledge of local languages such as Twi, Dagbani, or Ewe gives you a strong advantage.
- Design Skills: You have proven ability to produce visually engaging materials. Your portfolio will show diagrams, icons, and checklists that bring technical content to life.
