According to the International Passport Index report, Japan continues to hold the top spot for the most powerful passport in the world in 2023. Up to 193 countries will let Japanese people in without a visa or give them one when they arrive.
TYPES OF JAPANESE PASSPORT
The various forms of Japanese passports are as follows;
- Ordinary Passport: Passports are typically issued to Japanese nationals. Ordinary passports are given with either a 5 or 10-year validity period.
- Official Passport: Public officials and National Diet members are given official passports.
- Diplomatic Passport: Members of the Royal Bloodline, ambassadors, and high-ranking government officials are all granted diplomatic passports.
- Emergency Passport: When a Japanese diplomatic mission is unable to issue machine-readable passports, an emergency passport is given to Japanese nationals living abroad.
- Travel Passport for Return to Japan: Japanese citizens living abroad are issued emergency single-use travel documents for Japan. Immediately after usage, invalidated.
PASSPORT VALIDATION PERIOD
Only a 5-year passport can issued to Japanese citizens under the age of 16, but those who are 17 years old or older can choose between a 5-year and a 10-year passport for a different registration fee.
JAPAN PASSPORT ELIGIBILITY CRITERION
To be eligible for a Japanese passport, one must fulfill the following conditions:
- Most importantly, the individual must have held a legal status of residence for the entire time specified and must have stationed in Japan for 5 years or more in a row.
- Additionally, the person must be at least 20 years old and fully capable of acting under the laws of his or her own country.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE PASSPORT APPLICATION PROCESS
The necessary paperwork required for Japanese passport application may differ between municipal offices, but generally speaking, you would need:

WHERE TO APPLY FOR A JAPANESE PASSPORT
