IRCC Updates for Study Permit Applicants 2024 | Canada’s International Student Cost of Living

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued a significant notification regarding the modification of the cost-of-living criterion for those requesting study permits. When these changes are implemented, they will take effect on January 1, 2024. To be more specific, the modification is designed to bring the financial criteria in line with the actual cost of living in Canada. This is done with the intention of resolving issues over students arriving with insufficient cash. First, let’s explore the repercussions, the reasoning behind the decision, and the additional updates that have been supplied by the IRCC. This will allow us to delve deeper into the facts of the situation.

Things That You Should Be Aware Of Regarding the Changes That Have Been Made to the Cost-of-Living Requirement

Twenty thousand six hundred and thirty-five dollars will be the minimum amount of money that a single student must have in order to satisfy the requirement for the cost of living at the beginning of the year 2024. This will be the minimum amount that a student must take into consideration. In addition to the expense of tuition and transportation, this significant spike, which is more than twice as high as the previous minimum of $10,000 that was established in the early 2000s, takes into consideration living expenditures. Given that the previous financial laws did not adequately represent the actual cost of living in Canada, the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recognizes the relevance of this adjustment and underlines its significance. This is because the previous regulations did not adequately represent the actual cost of living in Canada.

In line with the low-income cut-off (LICO) that was produced by Statistics Canada, the department will now be responsible for updating the cost-of-living requirement on an annual basis. Additionally, the department will be responsible for implementing the LICO. In order to solve the situation, this is done in order to take into consideration the possibility of variations in the fees associated with living expenditures. To ensure that people in Canada are able to meet their fundamental needs without having to devote an excessive amount of their income to the payment of critical expenses, this measure’s objective is to ensure that they are able to do so. The execution of this step will constitute the means by which this objective will be achieved.

In addition, new financial regulations will be implemented for the Student Direct Stream (SDS), which is a study permit stream that is well-known for its criteria for processing time that are substantially lower than those of other streams. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) notes that the impact of these adjustments may differ from person to person, despite the fact that it is of the opinion that they will result in enhanced student protection. It is the objective of the department to provide assistance to underrepresented groups of international students who are pursuing their education in Canada. The department intends to carry out specific pilot programs over the course of the following year. These projects are going to be implemented all around the province of Ontario.

Extended Working Hours and PGWP Updates

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has made the decision to prolong the exemption from the 20-hour work week limit until the 30th of April in the year 2024. This decision was made in order to facilitate overseas students seeking to attend colleges and universities. This is in addition to the adjustments that were made to the cost of living that were previously mentioned. Students who are already in Canada and those who have made an application for a study permit as of December 7, 2023, are both eligible for the program. Those who are not eligible for the program are not eligible for the program. During the period that they are enrolled in any academic program, students are provided with the opportunity to work more than the typical twenty hours per week. This opportunity was made possible as a result of the enactment of this legislation, which entered into effect in November 2022.

In addition, Minister Miller provided in-depth information regarding two significant occurrences that have taken place in connection with the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The provision that allows students to count online study terms toward their final PGWP has been extended until September 1, 2024. However, the regulation stipulates that students can only contribute up to half of the overall program duration under this option. This provision has been extended until September 1, 2024. In light of the fact that the provision has been expanded, this conclusion was arrived at after taking some deliberation into account. Please take note that after this date, there will be no more unusual extensions that can be granted. This is a crucial point to keep in mind. Individuals who are eligible to submit an application are those who are in compliance with the most recent extension policy and whose work permits are set to expire on or before December 31, 2023. However, once this period of time has expired, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will not make any further requests for extensions of the PGWP.
