Exploring the Super Visa as an Alternative to PGP 2024 Invitations

Exploring the Super Visa as an Alternative to PGP 2024 Invitations

If you do not receive an invitation to apply for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) 2024, do not despair; the Super Visa emerges as an appealing option. This essay digs into the complexities of the Super Visa, which allows Canadian parents and grandparents to stay in the country for an extended period of time. Let’s take a look at the characteristics, eligibility requirements, and application process that make the Super Visa a viable option.

The Super Visa: An Overview

The Super Visa is a temporary visa designed to allow parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit for an extended period of time. Unlike the PGP, which has invitation rounds, the Super Visa is available all year, making it a more flexible option for family reunification.

The Advantages of the Super Visa

The duration of the Super Visa is one of its distinguishing features; it permits parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years without having to renew their visiting status. Those who already have a Super Visa can request an extension, potentially allowing them to stay in Canada for up to seven years. Furthermore, the Super Visa allows for numerous entries into Canada over ten years.

Criteria for Eligibility

Candidates must demonstrate their relationship as the parents or grandparents of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to be eligible for the Super Visa. This relationship must be supported by documentation, such as a birth certificate. While a spouse or common-law partner may accompany the applicant, dependents are not permitted.

Applicants must show proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, as well as a letter of invitation from their child or grandchild addressing financial support commitments, household data, and proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency. Meeting the Low-Income Cut Off (LICO) income standards is critical, and the child or grandchild must demonstrate financial capacity through various papers such as tax assessments, job letters, and bank records.

On December 7, 2022, a big change happened, removing the requirement for applicants to pay the complete insurance coverage upfront when applying for the Super Visa. Obtaining medical insurance from a Canadian provider, however, remains necessary. The policy should be active for at least one year from the date of arrival and offer at least $100,000 in emergency coverage.

The Application Procedure

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) review the final, comprehensive application. The goal of the visit is considered, as is the preservation of ties to the home nation. Family ties, financial stability, and other external affiliations are all important factors in this evaluation.

Applicants for Super Visas must additionally pass a medical examination. Once accepted, the visa is stamped into the applicant’s passport, or a letter is sent to a border services officer upon arrival in Canada if the applicant is from a visa-exempt nation.

For individuals who did not receive PGP 2023 invites, the Super Visa looms as a strong option. Its adaptability, length of stay, and year-round availability make it an appealing alternative for parents and grandparents looking for an extended stay in the loving embrace of their Canadian families. The Super Visa shines as a beacon of accessibility for family reunification as we negotiate the intricacies of immigration processes.

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) allows parents and grandparents of Canadian permanent residents and citizens to immigrate to Canada and enjoy the benefits of permanent residence (PR) and even citizenship; however, due to its lottery system selection process and once-a-year availability, it is less available than the Super Visa.

Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) Vs. The Super Visa

The Super Visa is a temporary resident visa (TRV) that permits parents and grandparents of Canadian PRs or citizens to enter and stay in Canada for an extended period (up to ten years with five years of continuous residence). It is available all year; however, it does not offer parents or grandparents the same choices for PR and eventually citizenship as the PGP.

Eligibility

Candidates who want to sponsor their parents or grandparents through either program must be at least:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • At the time of application and when parents or grandparents are expected to arrive in Canada,
  • Having a good financial standing

Ineligibility

In addition to failing to meet the eligibility requirements, candidates will be ineligible for either program if they:

  • Failure to repay an immigration debt, a performance bond, or court-ordered family support (such as alimony or child support);
  • Did not offer the promised financial help when previously sponsoring a family member;
  • Any additional ineligibility conditions apply.
  • Budgetary requirements
  • Candidates for the Super Visa must demonstrate that their household fulfills the required
  • Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) standards.

Candidates for the PGP should aim to meet the program’s Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirements. Before applying, candidates must demonstrate proof of funding by getting a Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA), demonstrating that the sponsor has met the MNI for their case and has done so for the previous three taxation years.

The application procedure

The application process for Super Visa sponsorship is comparable to that of a regular TRV. However, further paperwork is required to demonstrate that parents and grandparents can be cared for after they arrive in Canada.

Candidates for the PGP must complete the processes to meet and establish their eligibility before submitting this information to be included in the candidate pool. If candidates are chosen, they will receive an invitation to apply, which will lead to the next steps.

The sponsored individuals cannot be medically or criminally inadmissible to come to Canada under either the PGP or the Super Visa. Both programs require an Immigration Medical Exam (IME), and the PGP additionally requires a police certificate.

Quebec availability

Both programs are open to Quebec residents and citizens, although there are additional requirements, such as a unique MNI system (for both the sponsor and the sponsored) and the necessity to earn a Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ).
