Canada Announces Extension of a Community Stream + Juicy Relocation Offers For Immigrants

With its stunning natural beauty and vibrant local communities, Yukon, one of Canada’s three territories, is an increasingly popular destination for foreign workers seeking a uniquely Canadian experience. But there’s much more to Yukon’s appeal than meets the eye. The Yukon Community Program (YCP) offers a comprehensive package of benefits for both employers and foreign workers, including pathways to permanent residency and a unique work permit option

The YCP, a collaboration between the Government of Yukon and Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is a community-driven initiative designed to fulfill local labor needs while providing foreign workers with rewarding work and life experience in Canada’s true North. A key facet of the program is the opportunity for foreign workers to obtain a work permit that allows them to work for up to three employers in the community without the need for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

Traditionally, an LMIA, an assessment that provides evidence that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill a job and that no Canadian worker is available to do the job, has been a crucial step in obtaining a work permit. However, the YCP’s unique work permit program waives this requirement, greatly streamlining the application process and making it more attractive to both employers and foreign workers.

This groundbreaking move removes a significant barrier to employment for foreign workers while giving local businesses greater flexibility in fulfilling their staffing needs. This is particularly important in a region like Yukon, where certain industries such as mining, tourism, and health care are experiencing high demand for skilled workers.

Application Process for Employers

For employers, participating in the YCP requires a series of steps. Firstly, the employer must provide a job offer to the foreign worker. Once the foreign worker has accepted, the employer must then develop a Settlement Plan in collaboration with a local settlement service provider. This plan outlines how the employer will assist the foreign worker in settling into their new life in Yukon, including housing, banking, transportation, and local community services.

After finalizing the Settlement Plan, employers must submit an application for a community recommendation to the Government of Yukon. If approved, the foreign worker can then apply for a work permit directly through IRCC.

Benefits for Foreign Workers

The benefits for foreign workers participating in the YCP are numerous. Firstly, the streamlined application process removes the need for an LMIA, a traditionally cumbersome and time-consuming process. Secondly, workers receive an accommodation plan provided by their employer, assisting them in finding appropriate housing and facilitating their transition into Yukon’s vibrant communities.

Moreover, the YCP also provides access to comprehensive settlement services. These services, offered by local organizations, offer assistance with a wide array of tasks, such as setting up a bank account, enrolling children in school, finding health care services, and getting to know the local community.

Perhaps most importantly, the YCP offers a clear pathway to permanent residency for foreign workers. This gives workers the security and peace of mind of knowing they can make a long-term commitment to life in Yukon, a feature that sets the YCP apart from many other foreign worker programs.

YUWIN: Yukon’s Job Portal

To further facilitate the connection between employers and prospective foreign workers, Yukon offers a dedicated job portal: YUWIN. YUWIN allows foreign skilled applicants to browse available jobs across a wide range of industries and apply directly through the platform. By providing a centralized location for job postings, YUWIN simplifies the job search process for foreign workers and helps employers reach a broader pool of candidates.

The Yukon Community Program is an innovative approach to local economic development and immigration that offers significant benefits for both employers and foreign workers. By streamlining the hiring process and providing comprehensive support services for newcomers, the YCP is an appealing option for those looking to experience life in one of Canada’s most breathtaking regions. Whether you’re an employer seeking skilled labor or a foreign worker looking for a unique opportunity, the YCP could be the solution you’ve been searching for.

Process of the Yukon Nominee Program

  1. Employers who are eligible for the Yukon Nominee Program put ads in local and national papers about the job. If no qualified Canadians or permanent residents apply, the employer may use the Yukon Nominee Program to fill the position.
  2. No qualified Canadians or people who live there permanently apply for the job.
  3. The employer looks at the eligibility requirements for each stream of the Yukon Nominee Program (YNP) and decides which stream to apply for.
  4. The employer offers a full-time, permanent job to a foreign national who meets the requirements.
  5. For the Yukon Nominee Program, both the employer and the foreign national fill out all of the necessary forms.
  6. The employer fills out the application, makes sure that all forms and documents are attached, and sends it to the Yukon Nominee Program.
  7. Once approved, the employer uses the Employer Portal to send the compliance fee and the job offer letter to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  8. Once a foreigner’s application is approved, they become a nominee.
    • If the nominee is not in Canada when they are approved, they must meet the visa requirements set by the IRCC for their home country.
    • If the nominee is already in Canada with a temporary resident permit when their application is approved, they can keep working until it’s time to renew their permit.  The candidate can then apply for a new work permit or renew the one they already have.
  9. After we approve the application, the employer and nominee must sign a Tri-Partite Agreement (TPA) with the Government of Yukon.
  10. Within 6 months of signing the TPA, the nominee sends an application for permanent residency to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  11. The nominee works for the employer on a temporary work permit while their permanent residency is being processed.
  12. The candidate passes all of the security, health, and criminality checks that are needed to get in.
  13. The nominee becomes a permanent resident of Canada once the IRCC says yes to their application for permanent residency.
