Big Changes in Canada Express Entry: New Canada TEER System 2023

The TEER system classifies occupations under Canada’s new NOC 2021 framework. Important Canada immigration programs, like Express Entry, PNP, and others, largely run because of the NOC (National Occupational Classification) system.

The many jobs that are present in the Canadian labor market are classified or categorized. As a result, selecting the appropriate occupation when registering as a candidate in an immigration program is helpful for Canadian immigration candidates.

NOC System

The NOC system is explained in the following few essential aspects, along with how it relates to you as a Canadian immigration candidate.

  • All of the occupations that are present in the Canadian labor market are classified or categorize using the NOC, or National Occupational Classification, system. This classification was created by ESDC and Statistics Canada, and it is updated every ten years.
  • Second, the NOC system assists Canadian businesses and job searchers in defining and comprehending the nature of a job or line of activity in the Canadian labor market.
  • Thirdly, to register your profile and apply for a visa in Canada through well-known immigration programs like Express Entry or PNP, you must select an appropriate NOC vocation from the list of NOCs in Canada.

Canada has implemented the new NOC 2021 system as of November 16, 2022, replacing the previous NOC 2016 system. Based on the TEER category system, the NOC system

How the New TEER System Works

On November 16, 2022, the IRCC made the transition to NOC 2021 Version 1.0. See the essential characteristics of the new TEER system under NOC 2021 below:

  • First and foremost, the TEER (Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities) required to do a job are represented by six categories under the new approach.
  • Second, the New TEER system replaces the Old 4-digit occupation codes with 5-digit codes for each NOC occupation.

The qualifying requirements for all programs using the new TEER 1 system under NC 2021 have also been modified by IRCC.

New TEER Categories vs Old Skill Type or Level

From 16 November 2022, the Canada immigration programs will use TEER categories instead of NOC skill types or levels:

  • First, most positions remained in the TEER group, corresponding to the competence level in the following table.
  • Next, a small number of positions have been reclassified as TEERs.
  • Additionally, occupations at skill level B are now TEER 2 or TEER 3 positions. To determine which TEER category your occupation falls under, you may discover it on the new NOC Occupation List.
Skill Type or Level TEER Category
Skill Type 0 TEER 0
Skill Type A TEER 1
