We are currently seeking an experienced and self motivated Civil Engineer to join our dynamic Project Department, supporting operations across Africa.
Duties and Responsibilities
This is a high impact role reporting directly to the Lead: Engineering, Design and Integration. You will join a small but elite team of engineering specialists. Your primary accountability will span the entire project lifecycle, from initial studies and design through to costing, documentation, and delivery management. You will own the civil engineering scope for projects executed at various sites across Africa.
Your core accountabilities will include:
Strategic Design & Analysis
- Investigate and Analyse Opportunities: You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary peers to identify opportunities for improvement in existing and planned plant facilities. You will analyse potential threats and develop innovative solutions.
- Develop Concept Solutions: You will translate business requirements into tangible engineering concepts. You will create solutions for earthworks, drainage, roads, fluid storage, concrete works, and structural steel.
- Evaluate and Recommend Best Solutions: You will weigh technical considerations against budget constraints and business needs. Consequently, you will recommend the most effective path forward to stakeholders.
Project Execution & Management
- Progress Design Through All Levels: You will take civil works from concept through to detailed design. This includes earthworks, concrete structures, steel structures, and infrastructure reticulation. You will manage this process with or without EPCM involvement.
- Scope and Specify Contractor Work: You will develop clear scopes of work and specifications for EPCM partners and contractors. You will ensure they understand exactly what the project requires.
- Manage Work Execution: You will oversee work execution to ensure it meets the required standards. You will verify that construction aligns with design intent and quality specifications.
- Professionally Approve Final Deliverables: You will have the authority to professionally approve and endorse final designs and completed works. Your stamp of approval will signify quality and compliance.
Collaboration & Leadership
- Communicate Effectively with Stakeholders: You will serve as the key technical liaison. You will communicate complex engineering information clearly to project managers, site teams, and external partners.
- Coordinate and Track Discipline Activities: You will maintain oversight of all civil engineering activities within projects. You will track progress and ensure alignment with project schedules.
- Guide and Develop Junior Colleagues: You will share your knowledge and experience to mentor developing engineers. You will help build the next generation of talent within the organization.
The Ideal Candidate Profile

To excel in this role, you will need:
Qualifications & Registration
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, preferably a 4 year program.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer with an internationally or locally recognized professional body is a strict prerequisite.
Experience
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in projects, designs, and construction within the mining industry or a related heavy industrial environment.
- Proven experience in Project Execution and Management, taking projects from concept to completion.
- Demonstrated experience in HSE Management, ensuring safety is integrated into every aspect of work.
- Hands on experience in QA/QC Management, maintaining rigorous quality standards.
Technical Skills
- The ability to perform and verify structural calculations for both steel and concrete structures.
- The capability to design and analyse earthworks working drawings with precision.
- Proficiency in MS Office, document management systems, and project management software.
- Working knowledge of engineering and draughting software, including Prota-structure, AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Bentley products.
Advantageous Additions
- Formal project management education or certification.
- Hands on experience with multi-dimensional modelling or draughting software and GIS applications.
