The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), in collaboration with the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), invites applications from African researchers for the COMPASS Fellowship Scheme for the 2025–26 academic year. This initiative is designed to empower emerging public health leaders from sub-Saharan Africa as they tackle some of the region’s most pressing infectious diseases and emerging health threats.

The fellowship provides a unique opportunity for researchers to enhance their skills, develop impactful solutions, and contribute meaningfully to public health initiatives. By supporting innovative research and fostering collaboration among health professionals, the COMPASS Fellowship aims to strengthen the capacity and resilience of health systems throughout sub-Saharan Africa, ultimately improving health outcomes for communities faced with these significant challenges.

About the COMPASS Fellowship Scheme

The Creating Opportunities for Master’s Programmes in Africa: Support and Scholarships (COMPASS) is an esteemed program focused on enhancing research capabilities in sub-Saharan Africa. It encompasses:

1. Training Component

A completely funded two (02) Master’s degree through Distance Learning (DL) from LSHTM.

Master’s programs offered: MSc Clinical Trials (Distance Learning), and MSc Epidemiology (Distance Learning).

2. Internship Component

  • A research or policy internship lasting 6 or 12 months at the fellow’s home institution or a partner institution in sub-Saharan Africa that is engaged in collaboration with LSHTM.
  • Internships may be chosen from a list curated by LSHTM or suggested by the applicant.

Candidates can submit applications for: 

  • A comprehensive fellowship (training and internship),
  • A reward solely for training, or
  • A prize exclusively for internships.

Benefits of the Fellowship

  • Complete payment of MSc tuition fees
  • Internship assistance (financial support, guidance, organizational hosting)
  • Mentorship in academics and professional development is provided by LSHTM faculty and international partners.
  • Access to worldwide research networks and hands-on experience
  • Finally, adaptable education through remote learning.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants are required to:

  • Reside in a nation located in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Worked in sub-Saharan Africa for the past 12 months.
  • Engage in research fields of significant public health importance, such as:
    • HIV, tuberculosis, malaria
    • Overlooked contagious diseases
    • Infections related to diarrhea and the respiratory system
    • Health of mothers and children
    • Antibiotic resistance
    • Infectious diseases associated with climate change
    • Co-infections and concurrent conditions
  • Obtain employer backing with a promise to keep the fellow for 2 years after finishing.
  • Do not acquire any additional external funding for their MSc.

Particular attention will be paid to: 

  • Females
  • Applicants for whom English is not their native language (with English proficiency)
  • Candidates from African nations with restricted research facilities
  • Lastly, applicants with specified or flexible internship placement choices.

Academic Entry Requirements

For new entrants: 

  • A lower second-class honours degree or equivalent qualification in a related area, OR
  • A professional credential coupled with a minimum of 3 years of pertinent experience.

For current MSc DL students:

  • Must be in their first year of enrollment or in their final year if they have already surpassed year two.
