Company Overview
The Mastercard Foundation is a dynamic global organization with a profound mission: to advance learning and promote financial inclusion for people living in poverty, primarily in Africa. We are driven by a vision of a world where everyone has the opportunity to learn and prosper. Our work focuses on enabling young people to secure dignified and fulfilling work, fostering equitable and resilient communities.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a seasoned professional for the role of Lead, Qualitative Outcomes & Impact Measurement. Reporting to the Head of Outcome & Impact Measurement, you will lead the generation and interpretation of qualitative evidence across our initiatives. Your work will illuminate the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind change, centering the voices, experiences, and narratives of young people. This role is critical for anchoring the qualitative dimension of our impact measurement system, ensuring deep contextual insights and stories inform our learning and strategic direction.
Key Responsibilities
You will translate strategic frameworks into actionable, insightful qualitative inquiry. Your primary duties will include:
- First, you will translate the Foundation’s Impact and Measurement Frameworks into robust qualitative study designs and participatory inquiry processes.
- You will lead qualitative and participatory studies that explore youth journeys toward dignified work, examining enabling factors, barriers, and personal definitions of impact.
- A core responsibility involves providing technical leadership on qualitative methods, analytical frameworks, and software tools like NVivo or ATLAS.ti.
- Furthermore, you will synthesize qualitative insights from various programs to surface powerful youth narratives, thematic patterns, and contextual explanations.
- You will also ensure youth voices directly shape how we generate, interpret, and communicate evidence of impact.
- Additionally, you will offer expert guidance to partner organizations in co-designing and executing high-quality qualitative studies.
- You will build internal and partner capacity in qualitative research, participatory methods, and impactful storytelling.
- Crucially, you will collaborate with the Quantitative Lead to integrate findings into comprehensive mixed-methods learning products.
- Finally, you will curate and share qualitative evidence, including compelling narratives, to inform strategic decisions and organizational learning.
Who You Are
The ideal candidate is a collaborative, learning-oriented expert with deep methodological experience:
- An advanced degree in Social Sciences, Anthropology, Development Studies, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of eight years of experience designing and managing qualitative or mixed-methods research for large-scale international development programs.
- Expertise in qualitative methods (e.g., in-depth interviews, focus groups, ethnography) and evaluation approaches like outcome harvesting, most significant change, and contribution analysis.
- Proven skill in designing research questions and tools aligned with impact frameworks and learning objectives.
- Strong analytical and synthesis abilities, with a talent for communicating complex insights clearly for strategic decision-making.
- A deep commitment to integrating youth, gender, and contextual perspectives into all aspects of evaluation.
- A humble, collaborative, and adaptive mindset, with an appreciation for context-driven, values-aligned approaches in complex systems.
- Willingness to travel across Africa; professional proficiency in English is required, with French as a strong asset.
- Impeccable integrity, cultural sensitivity, and a demonstrated alignment with the Mastercard Foundation’s core values.
