POSITION: Lead Specialist – Blood Lead Testing 

Job Description

The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) partners to strengthen laboratory systems that protect public health globally. We are launching a critical initiative to establish blood lead testing capacity across Ghana, addressing a significant environmental health threat. Funded by the CDC Foundation, this multi-year project will build sustainable laboratory networks for toxicology testing.

We seek an accomplished Lead Specialist in laboratory sciences to anchor this vital work. This role demands expertise in toxicology and clinical chemistry, specifically regarding metals analysis in biological samples. You will collaborate with Ghana’s Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and other key partners to enhance the public health laboratory network.

Position Summary

Based in Ghana, this full-time role runs from January 1, 2026, to November 30, 2026, with potential for renewal. The Lead Specialist will provide technical leadership to strengthen blood lead level testing and surveillance. This position requires extensive travel within Ghana and may include occasional international trips for training.

Key Responsibilities

Your leadership will drive the project’s success across several core areas:

  • Design, implement, and monitor strategies that strengthen the national public health laboratory network, ensuring alignment with Ghana’s laboratory strategic plan.
  • Conduct comprehensive capacity assessments of clinical and research laboratories to evaluate their readiness for blood lead testing.
  • Develop and deliver specialized training and mentorship programs for laboratory staff on toxicology, Standard Operating Procedure development, and blood lead surveillance.
  • Coordinate the procurement of essential laboratory equipment, supplies, and quality assurance materials.
  • Enhance laboratory systems by supporting sample referral networks, quality management systems, data management protocols, and workforce development initiatives.
  • Foster collaboration by working with diverse stakeholders, including government ministries, international partners, and US public health laboratories.
  • Represent APHL authoritatively at national and regional meetings and prepare detailed monthly progress reports.

Your Qualifications and Experience

Essential Requirements:

  • An advanced degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Toxicology, or a closely related field.
  • A minimum of six years of professional experience in clinical diagnostic testing or research laboratories, with a focus on metals analysis.
  • Demonstrated expertise in laboratory quality management systems and international quality standards.
  • Proven experience engaging stakeholders, conducting training sessions, and managing collaborative projects.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software and fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Willingness to travel extensively within Ghana and occasionally internationally.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

Practical knowledge of analytical platforms such as ICP-MS, Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, and point-of-care devices like LeadCare II.

  • Experience within Ghana’s public health sector and familiarity with laboratory information systems.
  • A proactive professional with the ability to synthesize complex information and guide realistic planning processes.
