Job Posting at African Center for Economic Transformation

Job Title: Economist

The African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) is a premier economic policy institute supporting Africa’s long-term growth through transformation. We produce rigorous research, offer independent policy advice, and galvanize action for African countries to develop their economies, reduce poverty, and improve livelihoods. Also, we are the pre-eminent African organization advancing African solutions to African challenges.

We are seeking a highly skilled Economist to support our Youth Employment and Skills (YES) agenda. This is not a purely academic role. You will lead and contribute to high-quality analytical and consulting engagements, applying advanced quantitative methods to generate actionable insights on labor markets, skills development, and economic transformation across Sub-Saharan Africa. You will manage research projects, translate complex analysis into policy recommendations, and engage directly with governments and partners. If you have a Master’s degree with five years of experience or a PhD with three years, and a substantive focus on labor economics in Africa, we invite you to apply.

Your Responsibilities

As Economist for the YES agenda, you will play a central role in advancing ACET’s work on youth employment and skills. You will lead high-quality research and rigorous economic analysis on issues, trends, and policy reforms. Also, you will design and manage datasets, analyze quantitative and qualitative data, and produce technical reports and thought leadership pieces. You will serve as Project Lead on assigned initiatives, ensuring effective project management and timely delivery. You will also represent ACET as a technical spokesperson on economic and youth employment issues.

Your core responsibilities will include:

Research & Economic Analysis

  • Lead High-Quality Research: You will conduct rigorous economic analysis on youth employment, skills development, and structural transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Your work will shape policy debates.
  • Design and Manage Datasets: You will handle data collection, cleaning, validation, and database development for research programs and consulting engagements. You will ensure data integrity.
  • Apply Advanced Quantitative Methods: You will use your expertise in STATA or R to analyze micro-level datasets, including household surveys and labor force surveys. You will generate robust insights.
  • Stay Abreast of Economic Trends: You will monitor emerging global and regional trends in labor markets and education policy. You will keep ACET at the forefront of knowledge.

Policy Advisory & Project Management

  • Translate Analysis into Actionable Recommendations: You will distill complex technical findings into clear, policy-relevant advice for governments, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Serve as Project Lead: You will manage assigned initiatives, ensuring quality assurance, coordination, and on-time, within-budget delivery. You will own the outcomes.
  • Support the YES Chapter: You will provide strategic and analytical support to the YES Chapter of the Pan African Coalition for Transformation. You will contribute to evidence-based advocacy.
  • Provide Inputs to Proposal Development: You will contribute analytical expertise to winning new projects and funding.

Communication & Representation

  • Develop High-Impact Presentations: You will create audience-facing outputs tailored to governments, development partners, and private sector actors. You will make your insights accessible.
  • Write Technical Reports and Briefs: You will produce clear, compelling documents that communicate findings and recommendations effectively.
  • Represent ACET Publicly: You will serve as a technical spokesperson on economic and youth employment issues. You will engage with government counterparts, partners, and media as needed.

Leadership & Team Contribution

  • Serve as Deputy Team Lead: You will assume leadership responsibilities during the Head’s absence. You will provide continuity and direction.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: You will work effectively within diverse, multidisciplinary teams. You will contribute to ACET’s broader mission.

Qualifications & Experience

We are looking for an economist with strong quantitative skills, deep knowledge of African labor markets, and the ability to translate analysis into policy impact.

To excel in this role, you will need:

Education & Experience

  • A Master’s degree in Economics, Statistics, or a closely related field, with a specialization in Labour Economics, Development Economics, Education Policy, or Macroeconomics, plus a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience.
  • OR a PhD in a related field with at least three years of progressively responsible experience.
  • Demonstrated experience as an Economist or Research Analyst with a substantive focus on labour economics and/or education policy in an African context.
  • Strong experience working with micro-level datasets including household surveys and labor force surveys. Familiarity with nationally representative datasets in Sub-Saharan Africa is a strong advantage.
  • Experience in statistical modeling and forecasting will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and coordination, including planning, budgeting, stakeholder engagement, and delivery of research projects within agreed timelines. This is a must.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to translate rigorous analysis into actionable policy advice.
  • Proficiency in analytical and econometric software, particularly STATA and/or R.
  • Sound understanding of macroeconomics and the ability to communicate complex ideas using conceptual frameworks.
  • A self-starter who can work independently with minimal support, paying close attention to detail and taking responsibility for data accuracy.
  • Good leadership skills and the ability to work through problems independently and within teams.
  • Effective project management skills with experience managing timelines, deliverables, and budgets.
  • Ability to perform under pressure, manage competing priorities, and deliver on time with accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to distill technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English. A good command of French will be a significant advantage.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within diverse, multicultural teams.

Why You Will Thrive at ACET

This is an opportunity to shape policy at the highest levels across Africa.

  • Pan-African Influence: Your work will directly inform policy decisions across the continent.
  • Rigorous Research Environment: You will apply advanced methods to real-world challenges.
  • Strategic Impact: You will translate data into recommendations that governments and partners act on.
