What Really Happens to Your Body When You Quit Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant that is present in our drinks, chocolates, coffee, teas, and energy drinks. The caffeine reduces tiredness in the body and gives you a boost of energy. Abusing the intake of caffeine can lead to hypertension,  severe headaches, and insomnia.

For many, caffeine is what keeps them awake and alert therefore, weaning off it can have some short or long-term effects on the body.

So depending on how severe your caffeine habits are, you begin to experience some withdrawal symptoms. It may be mild or intense. It is best if you start quitting slowly rather than completely. These are some things that happen once you cut off caffeine.

    SIDE EFFECTS OF QUITTING CAFFEINE

1 . You could experience some headaches.

Withdrawing from your intake of caffeine can lead to you having severe headaches. According to a study by Wake Forest University, consuming caffeine restricts our blood vessels which slow blood flow. By quitting caffeine, these blood vessels return to their normal and may cause headaches. In trying to treat the headache, just make sure the medication you will take for your headache does not have caffeine in them.

2 . You begin to lose weight.

Be it coffee, tea, or even a diet soda, quitting caffeine can cause you to lose some weight.  One cappuccino from a coffee shop can contain about 470 calories and 59 grams of sugar. That is too much sugar for the body. That is why cutting off caffeine can help you lose some weight.

3 . You could become constipated.

Coffee is a diuretic which means that it stimulates our digestive system, just like it stimulates our neurological system. This also implies that there will be some irregularities in the bathroom. However, if water is replacing the caffeine then that is a good thing. Also, consuming foods rich in fiber like fruits, whole grains or vegetables will prevent constipation.

4 . You will sleep better.

Caffeine acts as an adenosine receptor antagonist. Adenosine is a chemical that accumulates in the Central nervous system during the day and makes you feel drowsy during the night.  When caffeine comes together with adenosine, it blocks the effect of how calm the neurochemical is.

    WHO SHOULD AVOID CAFFEINE

Caffeine may not be safe for everyone, thus you need to know your body and how it reacts to the substances it takes. You could also consult your doctor. You may want to avoid caffeine if you:

    • Are pregnant.
    • Are breastfeeding.
    • Have migraines or chronic headaches. Have high blood pressure.
    • Take certain stimulants, antibiotics, asthma medicines, and heart medicines. These medications can have interactions with caffeine.
    • Have anxiety.
    • Have a fast or irregular heartbeat.
