Virgin forests in Africa (TOP 5)
A Virgin forest is a forest that has attained great age without significant disturbance, it exhibits unique ecological features and is classified as a climax community. It is also known as primeval, their flourishing stable ecosystems have been allowed to unfold. It is unhindered by the mark of permanent human activity for over a century now.
These dense forest habitats are biodiversity hotspots, where wildlife and flora have been given the freedom to thrive. Africa is known to have eight percent of the virgin forest left in the world. This article will touch on the top five of these forest reserves in Africa.
1 . To begin with, KAKAMEGA FOREST – KENYA
It may be considered small when compared to its counterparts in America. Kakamega Forest’s existence speaks of its rich heritage, with wooded inhabitants ranging from Elgon teak. 700-year-old fig-trees, prehistoric ferns, and an array of more than 60 orchid species. Blue turacos add to the forest’s natural choir along with impressively horned grey-cheeked hornbill. Both share the trees with the extremely rare tree pangolin.
The blue and De Brazza’s monkeys, with more than 400 species of butterfly. The forest’s wildlife is yet to be extensively studied.
2 . Secondly, THE CONGO RAINFOREST
After the Amazon, the Congo Basin’s rainforests are the second green lung essential to the survival of the planet. It acts as a carbon sink and holds 8% of the globe’s carbon. This region impacts the rainfall patterns of the North Atlantic Ocean. It also acts as one of the earth’s integral fortifications against runaway climate change.
Kakamega is renowned for its abundant wildlife and incredible biodiversity. Most of its fabled residents include the African forest elephant, leopard, gorilla, and chimpanzee. This band of intact forest landscape reaches six countries, from Gabon and DR Congo to a lesser extent, to neighboring countries like Rwanda and Uganda.
3 . Thirdly, BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST – UGANDA
The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is also, a large primeval forest located in southwestern Uganda in the Kanungu District. The Bwindi forest is on the edge of the Albertine Rift, at elevations ranging from 1,160 to 2,607 meters (3,806 to 8,553 ft). The forest contains about 160 species of trees and over 100 species of ferns. The forest is on the edge of the western arm of the Great Rift Valley, a few kilometers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border.
4 . Also, THE ALBERTINE RIFT – EAST-CENTRAL AFRICA
The Albertine Rift montane forests is another tropical moist broadleaf forest eco-region in east-central Africa. The eco-region covers the mountains of the northern Albertine Rift. It is home to distinct Afromontane forests with high biodiversity.
5 . Finally, RUSIZI NATIONAL PARK – BURUNDI
Lastly, Rusizi National Park is a national park in Burundi. It is next to the Rusizi River. It is 15 km north of the city of Bujumbura and home to hippopotamuses as well as sitatungas.
