Vietnam Extends Visa-Free Access to 12 Countries with New Special Waivers
Vietnam is making travel easier and more appealing. Starting August 15, 2025, citizens from 12 European nations can visit Vietnam without a visa for 45 days. Additionally, a new policy offers special visa exemptions to scholars, tech professionals, business leaders, and cultural figures who can help advance Vietnam’s strategic interests.
Visa-Free Entry for 12 European Countries
Vietnam is now more accessible to travelers from several European countries. The following nations can enjoy visa-free entry starting mid-August 2025:
- Belgium
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Czech Republic
- Hungary
- Luxembourg
- Netherlands
- Poland
- Romania
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- Switzerland
This new development allows citizens from these countries to stay in Vietnam for up to 45 days without the usual visa complications. The change simplifies the entry process, encouraging more spontaneous and flexible travel plans. Importantly, this visa exemption applies to all passport types and is part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to boost tourism, valid until August 14, 2028.
If you’re from Poland, the Czech Republic, or Switzerland, you might already enjoy visa-free travel due to a separate resolution earlier this year. However, this new rule will replace the previous one, Resolution No. 11/NQ-CP, starting August 15, 2025.
Visa Waivers for High-Value Visitors
On the same day the visa-free policy was introduced, Vietnam’s government released Decree No. 221/2025/ND-CP. This decree outlines special visa waivers for select foreign nationals whose visits align with Vietnam’s economic and diplomatic goals.
Who qualifies for these waivers? Here’s a quick list:
- Invited by Top Leaders: If you receive an invitation from the President, Prime Minister, or other high-ranking officials, you qualify.
- Senior Officials: High-ranking representatives from other governments or large international organizations are included.
- Experts and Scientists: This group consists of researchers, university professors, and leading figures in technology and science.
- Business Leaders and Investors: CEOs, founders, and significant investors from international companies can also enter under this waiver.
- Cultural Icons: Well-known artists, athletes, and figures in entertainment have a place on this list too.
- Honorary Consuls: Those representing Vietnam abroad, even if unpaid, can benefit from this exemption.
- Invitations from Major Institutions: If invited by prestigious universities, research institutes, or significant companies in Vietnam, you may qualify.
In some cases, the Ministry of Public Security can grant visa-free entry to individuals who can contribute to the country’s strategic objectives, even if they’re not on the predefined list.
What This Means for Travelers
For European travelers from the listed countries, the new visa-free 45-day rule makes travel to Vietnam straightforward. No paperwork or fees are required—just book your flight and enjoy your stay. For those in academia, business, or cultural sectors, it’s essential to investigate whether you qualify for the special visa waivers.
Vietnam’s recent policy changes reflect a clear vision: to enhance tourism, attract skilled professionals, and foster international partnerships, while carefully managing who benefits from expedited entry. This approach not only opens doors for travelers but also strengthens Vietnam’s global connections.
