Scholarships are available to those who meet the requirements at the time of application or by Trimester 2 of the following year. They should submit 90-point theses with their master’s applications.
Students participating in Part 2 of a two-year Master’s degree will only be able to use the award to cover the cost of their thesis course.

Eligibility Requirements
Candidates are requested to apply if they are qualified and eligible at the time of application or if they will be by the start of Trimester 2 the following year. These applicants must be enrolled in a Master’s program with a minimum 90-point thesis requirement.
This could be the thesis course that counts for 90 points or more in the second half of a Master’s degree program, or it could be a thesis that counts for 90 points or more in a one-year Master’s program. The master’s thesis is typically identified by the course numbers 591 or 592.
Students taking a portfolio course of 90 points or more who follow the University’s Master’s by Thesis standards (see section 6 of those regulations) are also qualified. Students in 60-point dissertation courses cannot get this grant.
The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree or the first year of a Master’s degree from an accredited New Zealand university with a GPA of at least 7.0. The minimal GPA is 7.0, however, the University Research Scholarships Committee has discretion.
Benefits of the scholarship
The Scholarship provides a $15,000 tax-free stipend for one year in addition to covering tuition costs (applied to domestic fees for 120 points only). The scholarship will be awarded to the student for the entire one-year period that they are registered in their thesis course.
Registration notification will prompt the Scholarships Office to make the first payment. Monthly installments will be distributed to scholarship recipients. The Scholarships Office will contact the University about fee payments. Except for Australian students, overseas students must pay the difference between the domestic and international fees.
Without the approval of the University Scholarships Committee, the Wellington Master’s by Thesis Scholarship cannot be co-tenured with any other scholarships that have a combined value of more than $6,000. It is crucial to keep in mind that co-tenure with other prizes may lead to a reduction in the value of the scholarship stipend.

Conditions and Regulations
- Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington (the University)’s statutes, regulations, and procedures must be followed by the scholar. He or she must also be enrolled full-time in a postgraduate study.
- The scholarship expires if not accepted within four weeks. All Master’s by thesis offers must be accepted by Trimester 2 the following year. If a student has been enrolled for more than three months at the time of the offer, the University Research Scholarships Committee may limit the scholarship’s tenure.
- The Scholar will be required to work full-time on the research (and, where required by the regulations for the qualification, the accompanying coursework) that is necessary to complete the qualification. It should be noted that for the purposes of this contract, full-time is defined as at least 35 hours per week.
- The Scholar is aware that the University’s legislation, regulations, and procedures as well as this agreement may be violated, which could result in the postgraduate degree not being awarded.
- All leaves of absence, except appropriate yearly leave, must be approved by the University Research Scholarships Committee. This includes any time the Scholar must spend away from home conducting research for an authorized program or project.
- The Scholar is required to inform the Scholarships Manager as soon as possible of any interruptions or withdrawals from full-time study in the approved program or research, any changes to the Scholar’s supervisor, the deadline for submitting their thesis, and any address or phone number changes.
Application Deadline
Community Force is necessary for all scholarship applicants. A complete online application must be submitted by 4:30 pm on the closing date to be considered. Late or incomplete applications will be rejected. Any additional materials, including references, must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on the due date to be considered.
