USCIS Expresses Concerns Over Surge in H-1B Visa Applications
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is worried about the increase in requests for H-1B visas in the tech business.
The agency said that the number of H-1B visa applications has gone up for the second year in a row. This year’s draw saw a record-breaking 780,884 applications.
Hiring through H-1B Visa Program
Technology companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, and IBM often use the H-1B visa program to hire skilled foreign workers. Up to 85,000 people are given H-1B cards by the US government every year.
But the USCIS is worried that some people might try to cheat the system to get an unfair edge.
Possible Manipulation of System Raises Concerns
The agency says a substantial number of eligible registrations for beneficiaries with numerous eligible registrations has aroused worries that some may have tried to acquire an unfair edge by working together to submit several registrations on behalf of the same beneficiary. This may have favored them in the selection process.
USCIS has conducted many fraud investigations, rejected some petitions, and is forwarding some cases to federal prosecutors for suspected crimes based on lottery applications from the last two years.
Registrations from Repeat Applicants Rise Sharply
This year, there were 408,891 registrations tied to people who filed more than once. Last year, there were 165,180, and the year before that, there were only 90,143.
USCIS has said that it will keep trying to stop people from abusing the registration process and make sure that only people who follow the law can file an H-1B cap petition.
H-1B Visas Remain Controversial in Immigration Debate
H-1B visas have been a contentious issue in the debate about immigration, especially in the tech business. Critics say that they are used to replace US citizens and people who live there permanently. But tech companies say that they are necessary for getting hard-to-fill jobs, even though they have had to let people go in other areas.
