University of Zurich, Switzerland Graduate Scholarship 2022

Applications are open for PhD Studentship(s) in Molecular Virology and Innate Immunity to apply for scholarships at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

Laboratory of Prof. Dr. Benjamin G. Hale (hale.ben@virology.uzh.ch) University of Zurich, Switzerland

Project Area 1:

Molecular Biology of Interferon Signalling at University of Zurich, Switzerland

Recent studies from our team have uncovered new unexpected mechanisms by which human cells may trigger interferon production (Schmidt et al, PNAS, 2019), as well as how cells respond to interferon and upregulate antiviral genes to limit virus infection (Borold, Eletto, et al, EMBO Reports, 2021; Fernbach et al., Cell Reports, 2022).

We have also recently undertaken several proteomic screens to identify factors potentially involved in regulating these interferon signaling pathways. A Ph.D. project would be available in this area to dissect the molecular mechanisms by which these newly-identified factors contribute to interferon-mediated antiviral action.

Project Area 2:

Deficiencies in the Interferon System and Disease Susceptibility.

Building on the work of many other groups, we have partnered with clinical colleagues at the University Hospital Zurich to study patients with autoantibodies that target and neutralize the protective antiviral function of interferon.

We developed several antibody assays and could show that critically-ill COVID-19 patients with neutralizing autoantibodies against interferon have an increased risk of herpesvirus disease (Busnadiego, Abela, et al, medRxiv, 2022).

We are now interested to understand how these autoantibodies develop, how they impact disease susceptibility, and how their effects might be mitigated. A Ph.D. project would be available in this area to develop new molecular tools to study and analyze these autoantibodies.
