Concerning University of Southern Maine

In 1971, the University of Maine in Portland (UMP) and Gorham State College of the University of Maine (GSC) merged to form the University of Southern Maine (USM). In 1978, the University of Southern Maine replaced the original name, the University of Portland-Gorham (UMPG).

While Portland Junior Institution and Portland University—which included a law and business school—merged to form the University of Maine in Portland, Gorham State College was founded as Western State Normal School, a teacher’s institution that first opened its doors in 1879. Established in 1988, Lewiston-Auburn College is a division of the University of Southern Maine.

Submit an undergraduate application

Commence the application process for the University of Southern Maine (USM) from this page forward. Instructions and application deadlines for bachelor’s degree programs should be reviewed.

Priority for consideration for admission to our university is given to your academic record, the rigor of your high school curriculum, and your grade point average. When considering transfer students, the most recent academic record is given significant weight.

Deadlines for admissions

On a rolling admission cycle, we assess and accept applications throughout the entire academic year. We urge you to submit your application no later than the dates specified in the table below to qualify for particular opportunities. Academic scholarship consideration, early action, and other significant deadlines are coordinated by the beginning of each term.

The last day to submit an application for enrollment in the upcoming autumn term is August 15. Your application and all supporting materials are required before we begin the review process.

For the most advantageous financial aid package as a whole, submit your USM application and FAFSA by January 15.

International requirements for applications

Program-specific application prerequisites and due dates may differ. Peruse the aforementioned sections for program-specific navigation. Completely online programs do not fulfill the requirements for a student visa (I-20). In-person courses will be mandatory.

Before the evaluation of their applications, international students are required to fulfill the subsequent responsibilities, in addition to submitting the standard application materials:

• Present financial documentation demonstrating your capacity to cover living and educational expenses.
• Pay the $50 application fee (Canadian applicants are excluded).
• Supplementary prerequisites for candidates possessing an international college transcript
• College-level transcripts must be accompanied by an official evaluation that has been authorized by one of the subsequent transcript analysis agencies:
• NACES stands for the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
• AICE, or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, is the second
• Evaluations must be conducted on a course-by-course basis and confirm that the degree held satisfies the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in the United States.

NOTE: Certain Canadian universities are exempt.

Supplementary prerequisites for particular programs

• Creative Writing (MFA): Examine supplementary prerequisites for residency
• Supplementary prerequisites for candidates seeking international transfers
• If you are an F-1 student visa holder in the United States and are interested in transferring to USM from another college or university, you will be required to collaborate with the foreign student advisor at your present institution to complete a transfer form.
