Understanding the Types of Canadian Citizenship Ceremonies

Understanding the many types of Canadian citizenship ceremonies is critical for newcomers to Canada. They value the experience of attending a Citizenship ceremony very highly. Approximately 80% of qualified permanent residents in Canada applied for Canadian citizenship in 2021. They even noted their attendance at the naturalization ceremony to formalize their new status.

Citizenship ceremonies are noteworthy events that happen almost every day in Canada. These ceremonies are important rituals that celebrate a person’s loyalty to their new country as well as the home country’s commitment to them in return.

As a result of the frequent occurrence of citizenship ceremonies as well as the introduction of digital services, new Canadians now have the option of participating in a variety of citizenship ceremonies.

Types of Canadian citizenship ceremonies.

Citizenship ceremonies are classified into four types, which are as follows:

  • Standard Ceremonies;
  • Private Ceremonies;
  • Enhanced Ceremonies; and
  • Reaffirmation Ceremonies

Standard Citizenship Ceremonies.

A Standard Citizenship Ceremony takes place in a ceremony room in the IRCC’s office or at another site if the local office is insufficient or unavailable. There is also an option to take the oath using a digital standard ceremony. This is achievable using video conferencing software. A standard in-person ceremony can include additional elements. This suggests that the children may be invited to sing the national anthem in front of the room. They may also receive an invitation based on their potential leadership role within the country. After the citizenship oath, new citizens must have an opportunity to congratulate one another.

Incorporating one or more additional features does not qualify this category as “enhanced.”

The following additional items may be included:

  • Children’s participation;
  • Indigenous guest speakers:
  • Canadian Armed Forces or Royal Canadian Mounted Police;
  • Media Representatives;
  • Veterans and elected federal, provincial, and municipal officials are among the governing official’s distinctive speech topics.

Enhanced Citizenship Ceremonies

When a regular ceremony has the following elements, it becomes an upgraded ceremony:

  • Single or multiple host firms or external partners may include non-profit organizations such as the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, service organizations or educational institutions, the Lions Club of Toronto, or government agencies such as Parks Canada.
  • A host company’s president, a school principal, and artists such as singers, dancers, and poetry readers are among the notable guests. It also features indigenous entertainers such as drummers, singers, and dancers. Indigenous speakers vary from artists in that they deliver welcome speeches or prayers.
  • Higher-level officials include the Canadian Prime Minister, the Governor General, the IRCC’s minister, the territory commissioner, a lieutenant governor, veterans, and a chosen speaker. This excludes RCMP, CAF, and Indigenous speakers.
  • Physical ceremonies take the shape of a reception.

Private citizenship ceremonies

Private Citizenship Ceremonies are not open to the public and are often held for a specific family or individual. These are held under certain conditions, such as the following:

  • Subsection 5(4) of the Citizenship Act provides for a special award in exceptional instances.
  • Candidates who are critically ill and unable to travel.
  • Other people who are experiencing urgent or extreme conditions.

Reaffirmation Ceremony

The reaffirmation ceremony is a ceremonial event at which Canadians demonstrate their patriotism by reciting the citizenship oath and declaring their love for Canada. It is possible for any individual to organize a celebration of this kind for their company or educational institution. In order to be eligible for this position, the individual who frequently takes the lead in leading the group in reciting the citizenship oath does not need to obtain official approval from the Registrar of Citizenship. It is also possible that this individual is a judge of citizenship, a recipient of the Order of Canada, a school administrator, or the head of a community group.

Understanding what the Canadian Citizenship Ceremony is all about.

Let us briefly discuss how these Canadian citizenship ceremonies work. Here’s what happens at these ceremonies:

  • Participants will take the citizenship oath.
  • Obtain a Canadian citizenship certificate.
  • Sign the Affirmation of Citizenship form.
  • Sign the National Anthem.

Assuming full responsibility for the ceremony and presiding over the administration of the citizenship oath will be a judge or authority who is a citizen. When taking the oath of citizenship, it is common for numerous individuals to do it jointly. The authority that is in charge of the ceremony will administer the oath in both French and English. Participants in the competition will speak the exact same words that the official did.

It is important to note that participants are required to recite the oath in either of the two official languages of the country. On the other hand, it would be very much appreciated if they recited it in both languages. In addition to that, they will be given the opportunity to perform the Canadian national anthem in its bilingual style.

A new Canadian citizen will have the option of either swearing or affirming the oath. Whether they opted to take the oath is a reflection of the religious beliefs that they hold. There is the option of affirmation for individuals who do not want religious references.

Additionally, individuals are required to bring the holy book of their choice to the ceremony in order to take an oath to it.

The successful completion of the Oath of Citizenship is a prerequisite for participants to become citizens of Canada.
