UK to Require ETA for Travellers from 85 Countries Starting February 2026

Starting February 25, 2026, visitors from 85 countries, including the United States, Canada, and Japan, will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK. This new measure aims to enhance border security while simplifying the entry process.

The UK government has officially announced that the ETA will become necessary for all visa-exempt travellers. Previously, in a transition phase since its introduction in 2023, the ETA will be compulsory beginning early 2026. Airlines and travel companies must ensure their passengers have valid ETAs before they board flights to the UK.

What Is the UK ETA?

The UK ETA is a digital travel permit akin to the US ESTA or Canada’s eTA. It permits visitors to enter the UK for tourism, business, or transit without needing a traditional visa. As of now, over 13 million travellers have applied for the ETA since its launch in October 2023. The Home Office emphasizes that this system enhances border security while facilitating the entry of legitimate travellers.

UK Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Mike Tapp, supports the system, stating it gives officials better control over who enters the country. The digital checks help keep potential risks out while making the immigration procedure smoother for others.

How to Apply for the ETA

Travellers can easily apply online or through the “UK ETA” mobile app, which is available for iOS and Android users. The cost is £16 per person. Most applications receive approval within minutes; however, the government recommends applying at least three days in advance to account for additional checks. Once approved, the ETA links electronically to the traveller’s passport.
