UK Government Increases Financial Requirements for Student Visas Starting January 2025

The amount of money that international students must save has significantly increased, according to the UK government. As of January 2, 2025, students will have to provide more proof of their financial ability to be granted a visa. With no updates since 2020, the new regulations are intended to be consistent with domestic student maintenance loans.

The first change to the financial savings requirements for international students since 2020 has been announced by the UK government. Students who want to study in the UK will be impacted by this adjustment, which takes effect on January 2, 2025, and introduces new savings thresholds that account for current cost-of-living expenses.

Updated Financial Requirements for Students

International students now need to prove they have enough money to pay for living expenses for each of the nine months of their degree to be granted a student visa. Depending on whether the student plans to study in London or somewhere else in the capital, this requirement has various applications:

  • Students enrolled in London courses must provide proof that they make £1,483 a month.
  • Students who study outside of London must demonstrate that they make £1,136 per month.
  • The previous monthly requirements were £1,023 for areas outside of London and £1,334 for locations within London.

Why the Change?

This revision brings the required funds into line with the rise in maintenance loan amounts that domestic students can apply for. But since 2020, the financial criterion hasn’t been revised. A government report claims that these adjustments are part of a larger plan to keep up with inflation and the UK’s growing cost of living.

Total Amount Saved to Apply for a Visa

The total amount of savings that a student must demonstrate if they intend to study in London for nine months or longer is currently £13,348. This amount represents the total monthly requirement over the nine months, which is £1,483.

Flexibility in the Financial Proof

Students can achieve these requirements with some flexibility, according to the UK government:

  • Offsetting Maintenance Funds: If students have previously deposited their accommodation in the UK, they may be able to show less money overall.
  • Exemptions for Long-Term UK Residents: Students do not need to provide evidence of maintenance money if they have been living in the UK for at least a year at the time of application under a different type of visa.

Other Requirements for Student Visa

Aside from financial resources, candidates must fulfill several requirements to be granted a UK student visa. Among them are:

  • Acceptance Letter: A legally recognized UK educational institution’s Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
  • English Proficiency: Demonstration of language proficiency in English, usually by examinations such as TOEFL or IELTS.
  • Health Insurance: Sign up for the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) to use the National Health Service of the United Kingdom.
  • A valid passport, or travel document, is required.
  • Getting a UK student visa is guaranteed if these requirements are met.

Consequences for Enrolling Students

Although this modification may not have a significant impact on the recruitment of overseas students on its own, it is part of a sequence of policy revisions that together make the environment more difficult for potential students.

To keep these financial requirements in line with changes in home maintenance loans and economic conditions, the UK government has committed to reviewing and adjusting them regularly.

Limitations on Relatives

In addition, the UK places limitations on the dependents of foreign students, allowing only those enrolled in government-sponsored courses or postgraduate programs to bring their spouses or kids. In general, students enrolled in undergraduate or lower-level courses are not allowed to bring dependents into the United Kingdom.

Conclusion

International students who intend to study in the UK should budget for the possibility of having to meet these revised financial requirements. It can be easier to apply for a visa if you are aware of these changes and know your alternatives for offsetting maintenance payments.
