UAE to Replace Physical Emirates ID with Biometric Digital Version

The UAE is preparing to launch a digital Emirates ID system that uses facial recognition technology. This new system will eliminate the need for physical ID cards. By streamlining processes in travel, banking, hotel stays, and healthcare, residents will enjoy faster and more secure services.

This major shift marks a significant step towards digital transformation in the United Arab Emirates. The biometric-based digital identification system will enhance convenience and identity verification for both residents and travelers. The system is expected to go live within a year.

Overview: New Digital Emirates ID

The upcoming digital Emirates ID, also known as e-Emirates ID, will be a secure version of the physical ID card. Users can access it through official government apps like UAEPASS and ICP UAE. This allows users to store their ID securely on mobile devices, removing the need to carry physical documents.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) is leading this initiative. They have confirmed that e-Emirates IDs are already in use across various digital services.

How Will This Help Travelers?

The digital transformation will positively impact both residents and international travelers in several ways:

  • Simplified Hotel Check-Ins: Tourists and residents will no longer need to present a physical ID when checking into hotels, speeding up the process.
  • Faster Access to Healthcare: Patients can use their e-ID via mobile apps for medical appointments, ensuring quicker registration and service.
  • Effortless Banking Services: Financial institutions will use facial recognition for identity verification, making banking services more secure and efficient.
  • Smooth Airport Transit: While not officially confirmed, experts believe the system could integrate with airport immigration and security checks, easing travel further.

Push for Broader Adoption Across Key Sectors

During a recent Federal National Council (FNC) session, member Adnan Al Hammadi expressed concerns about the ongoing need for physical IDs. He pointed out that despite the UAE’s digital advancements, outdated verification systems still pose challenges for accessing essential services.

In response, Minister of State for FNC Affairs Abdul Rahman Al Owais assured that expanding the digital Emirates ID’s use is a priority. He highlighted the past successes of digital services and emphasized the need for full integration across all sectors.

Powered by UAEPASS: UAE’s Secure National Digital Identity

The ICP introduced facial recognition features during GITEX 2021 for the UAEPASS app, the official national digital ID solution. This app enables citizens and residents to securely access a wide range of services. Users can also request digital versions of official documents, including Emirates IDs and residency permits.

The upcoming rollout will further integrate biometric identification systems, tested in collaboration with key service sectors. The ICP also emphasizes that the system will comply with data privacy and security regulations, building user trust.

A Step Forward for Smart Travel in the UAE

This digital ID initiative represents more than just a technological upgrade. It is a significant advancement towards smart, paperless travel in the UAE. Whether you are a resident or an international traveler, the e-Emirates ID will make accessing services smoother, faster, and more secure.
