Mobile money has become a very popular platform by which individuals send and receive money. It is a convenient way to do all money-related transactions. Due to this popularity, some fraudulent people have duped people with their hard-earned money. With so many tricks up their sleeves, many have lost their monies.
It is for this reason, that a list of tricks used by these fraudsters has been compiled. This is to prevent unsuspecting individuals from falling victims to their acts.
TRICKS USED BY MOBILE MONEY FRAUDSTERS TO STEAL OR HACK YOUR ACCOUNT
1 . Intentionally sending you a message that your Mobile Money account is locked
With this trick, a random number sends you a text informing you that your account is blocked. After, the number gives you a call. The caller will pretend to be a merchant who mistakenly sent you an amount that should be sent to somebody else. They will continue and state that they blocked your account so you cannot withdraw the money sent.
Further, you will be asked to confirm if you received a message stating that a deposit has been made to your account. If you affirm positively, the fraudster will ask you to hold on while you are connected to a mobile money customer care agent for your number to be unblocked.
Within some minutes, you will hear the fraudster repeating the incident to another voice on the line. This second fraudster will ask you to follow some procedures to unblock your number. If you follow through, your account will be drained.
2 . Sending you spam messages
These fraudsters will send you messages that you have won a mobile phone, TV, or sometimes cash prices. The message will ask you to call to claim your prize. If you do not call, the fraudster will call and tell you there’re some procedures to follow. You will be asked to Dial some shortcode as you do it, your account will be drained.
3 . Calls that a relative of yours has been admitted and needs money for a blood transfusion.
The fraudsters will try to frighten you by saying your relative is on the verge of death. A supposed doctor will mention an amount you should send else your relative dies.
