Islam is one of the largest religions in Africa. The mosque which evolved from the Arabic word “Masjid” is a place where Muslims worship and also a place where they discuss social and intellectual issues.
Mosques come in all shapes and sizes; they differ from region to region based on the number of the Muslim population in that area. In the past and even today, Muslims have sought the services of local artisans and architects to create beautiful, magnificent mosques.
1 . Firstly, THE GREAT MOSQUE OF ALGIERS

The great MOSQUE of Algiers also known as the Djamaa el Djazair is the largest mosque in Africa. The construction of the mosque started in 2012 and was completed in April 2019.
The mosque covers a total area of 400,000 square meters, with a capacity of 35,000 people in the prayer hall. The mosque has a park, a public square, a cultural center, a staff housing area, a religious school, a fire station, and a library. It also boasts of the world’s tallest minaret, at a height of 265 meters.
2 . Secondly, KING HASSAN MOSQUE

The King Hassan mosque is a mosque that is found in Casablanca Morocco. It is the second-largest mosque in Africa and the seventh-largest in the world. The mosque has total coverage of 20,000 square meters and a capacity of 25,000 people in the prayer hall.
The roof is beautified with a series of 14 domes, and 50 Murano glass chandeliers of 6 m in diameter, 10 m in height, and a weight of 1200 kg each. Its minaret is also said to be the world’s second tallest at a height of 210 meters.
3 . Thirdly, CONAKRY GRAND MOSQUE

This mosque can be found in Guinea. It was built by Sekou Toure with financial support from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. It is the largest in West Africa. The upper level of the mosque has 2500 places for women and 10,000 below for men. The mosque’s large esplanade can also take 12,500 other worshippers. The mosque’s garden has the Camayanne Mausoleum, including the tombs of the national hero Samori Ture, Sékou Touré, and Alfa Yaya.
4 . Also, AL-AZHAR MOSQUE

The mosque was built in AD 970 and is located in Cairo the capital of Egypt. It is considered one of the highest religious authorities for Muslims in Egypt. The size of the mosque spans 12,000 square meters and has a capacity of 20000 worshipers.
5 . Lastly, THE NATIONAL MOSQUE

The national mosque is located in Ghana. It was built with the support of the Turkish Hudai Foundation. The mosque spans 40 acres of 17000 worshippers at a time. The mosque has other facilities which include a library complex, an office and residence for the Chief Imam, a research complex, a senior high school complex, a clinic, an administration block, an auditorium, and a conference center.
