Thailand to Introduce 300-Baht Tourism Tax, Raising Travel Expenses in 2024

Thailand intends to reinstate the 300-baht tourism tax to boost traveler infrastructure and revenue. To meet its challenging revenue goals, the tourism ministry is also thinking about bringing back its popular travel stimulus programs.

To increase tourist-related income, Thailand intends to reinstate the 300-baht tourism tax, hoping to reach 3 trillion baht by year’s end. The charge, which was earlier delayed, is anticipated to advance infrastructure and enhance visitor safety.

Tourism Tax Reintroduction Plans

Thailand’s 300 baht (US$8.20) tourism fee will be reinstated, according to a recent announcement by Minister of Tourism Sorawong Thienthong. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s previous administration had suspended the cost. The minister claims that the tourism tax will be essential to improving the nation’s attractions and infrastructure and guaranteeing the security of foreign tourists.

Even though the fee was agreed by the government in 2022, international visitors have not yet paid it. Those entering by land or sea will pay 150 baht, while visitors coming by air will pay 300 baht. The ministry needs further time to make sure the new system is prepared for use, thus, the collection process is currently being finalized.

The Collection Timing Is Still Uncertain

Minister Sorawong stressed that there is still uncertainty regarding the timeframe, even though the tourism ministry had hoped to start collecting the tax by the end of this year. The intention is to implement the tax without undermining the spirit of travel, making sure that passengers will not be harmed by the new arrangement.

Programs to Reintroduce Stimulus

Apart from the tourism tax, the Thai government is also thinking about bringing back popular stimulus programs from the epidemic era, such as the “We Travel Together” campaign. This program, which provides co-payment alternatives for travel and lodging, was very successful in bolstering regional economies throughout the pandemic.

Taking On Illegal Travel Enterprises

Concerns about unlicensed tour providers were also discussed by the minister. Even while the number of illicit businesses remains constant, authorities expect their operations to result in larger financial losses. The government is developing policies to stifle unlicensed tour operations.

Reforms to Visas to Increase Travel

To increase tourism and draw more tourists, Thailand has implemented visa modifications, such as longer stays and wider visa-free travel.

  • Longer Visa Stays: To facilitate the exploration of the nation’s undiscovered treasures, Thailand now grants longer visa stays to visitors, students, remote workers, and retirees.
  • Indian Passholders: To promote travel, Indian passport holders will be granted a 60-day visa-free stay in Thailand starting on June 1, 2024, and this benefit will last until November 11, 2024.
  • Extended Visa on Arrival: Up to 60-day stays are now permitted for citizens of additional countries with visa-on-arrival eligibility. With this modification, tourists from 93 countries can now fully take advantage of Thailand’s wide range of attractions.

Overview: Tourism Tax

The tourism tax was first announced by the government in 2022 and imposed a cost on foreign tourists. The purpose of this tax is to raise money for reinvestment in tourism attractions, infrastructure, and traveler safety. After being postponed by the previous administration, the government is currently giving it another thought to boost tourism and the economy.

The Tourism Tax’s Past

In Thailand, the concept of a tourism tax has been debated for several years. The tax was first planned by the government in 2022, but for a variety of reasons, its introduction was postponed. As part of its goals for economic recovery, the present administration is currently attempting to bring the program back.

When Will the Tourism Levy Go Into Effect?

The timing of the tourism tax’s reinstatement is yet unknown and is currently being reviewed. To guarantee that the favorable attitude among passengers is not impacted, the tourism ministry is trying to finalize the details of the collection process.

Conclusion

Thailand intends to increase tourist earnings while maintaining high standards for both domestic and foreign visitors by counterbalancing the reinstatement of the tourism tax with other effective stimulus measures.
