Tanzania Sokoine University of Agriculture Fully Funded PhD Scholarships 2025

International students and aspiring entomologists have a unique opportunity to further their academic careers through two fully funded PhD positions offered at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). These positions are part of the DISPEST_2 Project, which is designed to advance research and innovative strategies in the field of pest control.

Supported by the Belgian Development Cooperation in partnership with the Royal Museum for Central Africa (RMCA) in Belgium, the DISPEST_2 Project focuses on enhancing methods for managing fruit fly pests, a significant challenge faced by agricultural communities in Southeast Africa. By participating in this project, students will not only gain hands-on experience in entomological research but also contribute to the development of sustainable agricultural practices that aim to protect crops and improve food security in the region.

This initiative represents an exciting intersection of international collaboration, scientific research, and community development, providing a platform for students to make a meaningful impact in the field of agriculture and pest management.

The PhD programs will take place from April 2025 to March 2028, offering full bursary assistance for a duration of three years contingent on research progress, and the funding includes:

  • Registration and tuition fees
  • Living stipends
  • Fieldwork expenses.

Open PhD Opportunities

  • Predictive Analysis of Fruit Infestation by Ceratitis rosa and C. quilicii (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Southeast Africa
  • Predictive Analysis of Fruit Infestation by Ceratitis cosyra (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Southeast Africa

These research initiatives seek to evaluate the distribution of fruit fly species, simulate pest population levels, and improve pest-free areas (PFAs) to increase fruit exports from Tanzania.
