The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Iowa is currently inviting applications for the Spring 2026 Obermann International Fellowships (OIF). This program is designed for global researchers and artists who are looking to immerse themselves in a vibrant academic environment in the U.S.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, candidates must:
- Engage as active researchers or artists connected to institutions beyond the U.S. OR be self-directed researchers/artists with an impressive history, outside the U.S.
- Possess a research initiative or creative endeavour corresponding to current University of Iowa offerings.
- Participate in campus activities and academic conversations (English skills needed)
- Prepare to live in Iowa City throughout their fellowship period.
Please be advised that the Obermann Center provides a maximum of eight fellowships each academic year.
Fellowship Program Schedule
- Fellowship Duration (Spring 2026): From January 20 to May 8, 2026
- Required stay: 2 weeks minimum
- Maximum duration: One entire UI semester.
Fellows select their desired dates during the Spring 2026 semester.
Required Documents
- A resume (CV)
- Preferred start and end dates during Spring 2026 (Jan 20–May 8)
- A 2,000-word research proposal explaining its significance to the University of Iowa.
- A single-page reference list connected to the proposal.
- Two recommendation letters (only required if you do not possess a Ph.D. or terminal degree)
- Evidence of English language skills (TOEFL, IELTS, academic transcript, or video interview alternative).
Application and Visa Assistance
Once chosen, you’ll:
- Submit your passport and financial evidence ($1,000/month, in addition to $500/month for each J-2 dependent).
- Finalize visa paperwork through the UI’s iHawk system.
- Get your invitation letter and DS-2019 in 1–2 weeks.
- Arrange a J-1 visa appointment
- The Obermann Center pays your $185 J-1 visa fee!
