Study in USA: East Tennessee State University Master’s Scholarship 2027 (Fully Funded)

The 2027 East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Master’s Scholarship in Small Mammal Ecology provides an excellent opportunity for an ambitious student to pursue graduate research in wildlife ecology, forest ecosystems, and ecological interactions.

The Department of Biological Sciences at East Tennessee State University is seeking a master’s student to work in the Stephens Lab with Dr Ryan Stephens for the Fall 2027 cohort. The successful candidate will investigate the ecological roles of small mammals, their interactions with fungi, seeds, and forest environments.

The graduate research opportunity includes fieldwork in the Blue Ridge Mountains of East Tennessee and laboratory-based studies. Students will be able to assist with research on fungal spore dispersal, seed selection, seed dispersal, and feeding ecology of small mammals.

The scholarship provides two years of graduate support, a tuition waiver, a $12,200 annual stipend, and guaranteed summer salary in 2027. It is suitable for graduates interested in wildlife biology, mammalogy, ecology, conservation science, and ecological research.

About East Tennessee State University

East Tennessee State University is a public university in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the Southeastern United States. Its graduate programmes enable students to develop advanced knowledge and research skills across a range of academic disciplines.

Research Fields for East Tennessee State University Master’s Scholarship

1. Small Mammal Ecology

  • This area covers behaviour, feeding behaviour, habitat use, and ecological roles of small mammals.
  • Students will explore the relationships between mammals and their environment and how these relationships affect the structure and function of forest ecosystems.

2. Truffle–Mammal Interactions and Fungal Spore Dispersal

  • The laboratory studies, among other things, are the relationships between mammals and truffles, which are fungi that grow underground.
  • Studies in this area can help us understand the role of animals in fungal dispersal and ecological processes.

3. Seed Selection and Dispersal by Small Mammals

  • Small mammals can affect plant regeneration by their selection, consumption, transport, or dissemination of seeds.

4. Trophic Niche Dynamics of Small Mammals

  • Trophic ecology deals with the feeding relationships of organisms with their environment.
  • Students will learn about variation in diet among small mammal species, variation in such feeding patterns among habitats or seasons, and the implications of such patterns for ecological communities.

5. Forest Ecology and Community Dynamics

  • The research is also relevant to broader questions of forest composition, species interactions, and ecosystem functioning.

Requirements for the East Tennessee State University Master’s Scholarship

1. Relevant bachelor’s degree

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields or in a closely related area:

  • Biology
  • Ecology
  • Environmental Science
  • Natural Resources
  • Wildlife Biology or a related field

2. Previous research experience

  • Preference will be given to those with prior research experience in ecology, biology, natural resources, or a related discipline.
  • Relevant experience may include undergraduate research projects, laboratory work, wildlife surveys, ecological field studies, environmental monitoring or involvement in scientific research programmes.

3. Fieldwork experience

Experience in field data collection is an asset, especially in:

  • Small mammal live trapping
  • Forest composition measurements
  • Wildlife monitoring
  • Ecological sampling
  • Habitat assessment
  • Biological data collection

4. Valid U.S. driver’s licence or ability to obtain one

  • Applicants must possess a valid U.S. driver’s licence or be able to obtain one.
  • This requirement is important because fieldwork will take place in the Blue Ridge Mountains of East Tennessee, and driving may be required to access research sites.

5. Ability to participate in field and laboratory research

  • The successful candidates should be willing to undertake both fieldwork (outdoors) and laboratory-based studies.
  • Candidates should consider whether they are prepared to meet the practical demands of ecological fieldwork and the requirements of completing a research-based master’s degree.

6. Strong research interests

  • Applicants should have a genuine interest in one or more of the lab’s research areas: fungal spore dispersal, seed selection, small mammal feeding ecology, and forest ecosystem dynamics.

Benefits of East Tennessee State University Master’s Scholarship

1. Tuition waiver

  • Selected master’s students will receive a tuition waiver as part of the two-year support package.

2. Annual allowance of $12,200

  • The scholarship position will be paid a stipend of $12,200 per year.

3. Guaranteed summer salary in 2027

  • The scholarship contains a guaranteed summer salary in 2027.

4. Graduate support for two years

  • Successful candidates will receive support for two years, allowing them to conduct research, complete graduate coursework, and develop a master’s thesis.

5. Practical field research experience

  • The student will be conducting research in the Blue Ridge Mountains of East Tennessee.
  • Students interested in careers in environmental monitoring, conservation, wildlife management, or ecological research will find fieldwork important.

6. Laboratory research opportunities

  • The scholarship also offers the chance to get involved in research that takes place in a laboratory setting, as well as fieldwork.

7. Mentorship and academic development

  • By joining the Stephens Lab, students will work under the supervision of Dr Ryan Stephens and contribute to ongoing ecological research.

8. Career development in ecology and conservation

Graduates will be well prepared for future opportunities in environmental consulting, wildlife research, conservation organisations, government agencies, natural resource management, and further academic study.
