About Duke University Graduate School Fellowships

Other fellowships include summer research fellowships for the summer, teaching fellowships, and dissertation research travel awards.

Concerning Duke University

In 1924, James Buchanan Duke established Duke University as a tribute to his late father, Washington Duke, who died the previous year. The Duke family, originally from Durham, established a global financial empire through the production of tobacco goods and was instrumental in the development of the electrical industry in the Carolinas. For a very long time, the Duke family maintained an interest in Trinity College.

Trinity University was founded in 1838 in nearby Randolph County, at the same time that the local Quaker and Methodist groups established the Union Institute. In 1892, the institution, which was then known as Trinity College, relocated to Durham. Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and was linked with the Duke family until he died in 1929. He passed away in 1929.

The stipulations of an indenture made by Benjamin Duke’s brother James B. Duke in December 1924 led to the establishment of the family philanthropic foundation known as The Duke Endowment. This endowment made it possible for Trinity College to grow into what is now known as Duke University.

Both the physical campus and the academic programs at Trinity were able to grow as a direct result of the gift from Duke. When it was reconstructed in the stately Georgian style, the original location of the Durham campus became known as East Campus. West Campus, which was opened in 1930 and was designed in the Gothic style, is dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel.

The historic relationship between Duke University and the United Methodist Church is still in place.
