Fellowship Summary
This chance consists of a two-phase contest. Initially, candidates who are shortlisted are chosen internally by the University of Cambridge for match funding from the Isaac Newton Trust, a necessary condition set by the Leverhulme Trust. Those selected will subsequently be invited to submit applications for the national Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship program in February 2026.
All fields of historical study are encouraged. Nonetheless, the procedure is extremely competitive, with only a few scholars moving from internal selection to the national contest.
What is Included in the Fellowship?
Successful applicants will obtain:
- Funding for 50% of the salary over three years, financed by the Isaac Newton Trust.
- Extra salary deficit protection

Eligibility Requirements
You need to fulfill all the subsequent requirements:
- Not have occupied a full-time permanent academic role (including stipend-supported Junior Research Fellowships).
- PhDs submitted from 19 February 2022 to 19 February 2026 (considering career breaks).
- Possess a link to the UK, which signifies:
- You possess a qualification from a higher education establishment in the UK, or
- You will have occupied an academic position in the UK for a minimum of 4 months by 20 October 2024.

- By noon on Thursday, 13 October 2025, applicants are required to submit:
- A finished cover sheet (sent via email to: researchgrants@hist.cam.ac.uk)
- One document in Word or PDF format that includes:
- Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 A4 pages)
- List of publications (1 A4 page)
- Current research statement (max. 250 words)
- Comprehensive proposal of the intended research (max. 2 A4 pages)
Additionally:
- Two academic reference letters (one from a source outside Cambridge) must be sent directly by the referees to the address mentioned above by the same deadline.
- Later, there will be a requirement for an additional reference for the national stage.
