The University of Birmingham is celebrating its 125-year history by inaugurating an innovative scholarship program to assist Black British researchers in their pursuit of doctoral studies. The new PhD fellowship program will finance up to 12 exceptional Black postgraduate research candidates commencing in Autumn 2024. The effort reflects the university’s dedication to mitigating under-representation in academia and fostering opportunities for persons from many backgrounds.

  • Awardees will receive financial support comprising a stipend at UKRI rates of £19,237 annually for the 2024/25 academic year, in addition to tuition fee coverage beginning at £4,786 per year. This assistance is intended to encompass tuition, living expenses, and research-related expenditures.
  • Scholarship awardees will receive mentorship from distinguished faculty members, facilitating their academic progression.
  • Research Opportunities: Students will have access to cutting-edge research facilities and resources, promoting an environment conducive to outstanding intellectual endeavors.
  • The initiative will establish a supportive network for Black British PhD scholars, fostering collaboration and peer assistance.
  • The Research Training Support Grant will offer an additional £2,250 throughout the PhD program to facilitate conference participation, fieldwork, and other academic development activities.

Criteria for Eligibility

These scholarships seek to rectify the under-representation of gifted Black or Black mixed-heritage students in academics. Applicants are required to fulfill the subsequent criteria:

Designated as ‘Home’ for the purpose of tuition fees.

Select from the following ethnic categories: Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed – White and Black Caribbean, Mixed – White and Black African, or other mixed backgrounds encompassing Black African, Black Caribbean, or Black Other.

Not presently registered in a PhD program at the University of Birmingham.
Submitting an application for one of the twelve qualifying PhD projects available through this program.

Prior to application, candidates must acquaint themselves with the particulars of their selected project and consult the principal PhD supervisor regarding their eligibility.
