Study in the UK: UKRI Early Career Development Fellowships 2026

The UK Medical Study Council has announced its Early Independence Career Development Fellowship, and it could change the course of your study. This flagship programme provides up to five years of substantial support covering salary and project costs and allows you to set up your research programme at an eligible UK institution.

Researchers from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply, regardless of where they are currently based. But the deadline to submit your application is September 15, 2026.

This is a career-defining opportunity for scholars wishing to create independent research careers in the United Kingdom.

About UKRI Early Career Development Fellowships

This scholarship is for researchers taking their first substantial step toward independence. You should not apply if you already have an equivalent early-career fellowship, have received large grants as the lead on a project with responsibility for postdoctoral staff, or have another UKRI fellowship of the same sort under assessment.

Similarly, candidates are not eligible if they have an MRC New Investigator Award under consideration, are submitting the same proposal elsewhere, or have applied for an MRC fellowship in the last year. If you are a practising healthcare professional, you should consider applying for the distinct MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship.

Eligibility criteria for UKRI Early Career Development Fellowships

  • You will have a PhD or equivalent qualification at the time you take up the fellowship. To be eligible, researchers must have demonstrated excellent research skills and sustained output, as well as clear proof of professional growth through previous employment.
  • The suggested research plan should align with the MRC remit and outline a cohesive plan to establish your autonomous research identity.
  • Your proposal must not be a significant duplication of the work of current supervisors.
  • You will need the support of an eligible UK research organisation.
  • Your application must have at least one senior departmental sponsor.
  • There are no age limits, and the programme does not set a specific limit on the number of years of postdoctoral experience. International candidates can apply from abroad; however, their fellowship must be hosted by an appropriate UK institution.

Research Areas for UKRI Early Career Development Fellowships

Your proposal needs to be relevant to human health and within the remit of MRC research.

Eligible study areas include:

  1. Infections and immune response
  2. Cell and molecular medicine
  3. Neuroscience and mental health
  4. Population and systems medicine
  5. Public and Global Health
  6. Research methodology
  7. Developmental and translational research

Benefits of UKRI Early Career Development Fellowships 2026

This fellowship is aimed at researchers who are transitioning from being supervisors of group leaders to developing their own research specialisation and establishing a small team. The council will fund 80 per cent of the full economic cost and 100 per cent of the allowed costs of exceptions. You can claim any amount, but you must fully justify each expense.

Your complete funding package includes:

  • Pay and personal remuneration for research staff
  • Lab consumables and essential equipment
  • Career development activities and professional development programmes
  • Research travel expenses and cooperative opportunities.
  • NHS research costs when appropriate
  • Patient and public involvement activities
  • The visa costs and immigration health surcharge apply to you and your dependents.

The fellowship is for a maximum of five years and may be held part-time if flexibility is required due to personal circumstances. Successful candidates may also spend up to 12 months at another UK school, a foreign research organisation, or with an industrial partner.
