About the Wild Animal Initiative
The Wild Animal Initiative is a leader in promoting scientific research to improve wild animal welfare. As it expands, WAI seeks to develop a new generation of professionals equipped to address current and future challenges faced by wild animals. In partnership with SRUC and the University of Edinburgh, WAI is offering two fully funded scholarships for 2025, one for each of the master’s programs.
Available Degree Programs
1. M.Sc. in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare (On-Campus – Edinburgh)
- A one-year program held on campus in Edinburgh.
- The UK’s inaugural animal welfare degree, launched in 1990.
- Globally recognized for training leading experts in applied animal welfare science.
2. MSc in International Animal Welfare, Ethics, and Law (Online)
- Online program offered part-time with flexibility.
- Can be finished within a timeframe of up to six years.
- Perfect for individuals seeking to shift into careers in animal welfare.
- Provided collaboratively by the University of Edinburgh and SRUC.
Scholarship Coverage
Every scholarship granted comprises:
- Complete tuition fee coverage for both UK/Home and International students.
- For the on-campus MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare, extra funding could be available for moving and living costs.
- For the online MSc International Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law, complete tuition funding is provided for the full length of the program.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Advanced Wild Animal Welfare Scholarship, applicants must:
- Have submitted an application or obtained an offer for one of the two qualifying M.Sc. programs.
- Show a significant concern for the well-being of wild animals or compassionate management of wild species.
- Ideally, possess a degree or possess similar experience in ecology, though related areas like veterinary sciences or animal welfare science will also be taken into account.
- Fill out a short scholarship application, which should include a statement that emphasizes your motivation and qualifications.

- For MSc International Animal Welfare, Ethics, and Law (Distance Learning): July 31, 2025.
