Program Overview

Few incoming university students possess much experience in study pertaining to the unknown. Introductory university courses offer descriptions of fundamental processes that are well-established and even found in textbooks. The initial chance to study at the frontier of the unknown can be a transformative event that remains memorable throughout one’s life. The School of Biology under the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) offers the Summer Undergraduate Research (SUR) Programme for novices to get initial experience.

Over a period of 8 weeks in July and August, the SUR Program accommodates around 15 undergraduate students with backgrounds in biological and medical sciences from various countries. Every participant will conduct their own research project in a distinct laboratory within the Faculty of Biology and Medicine. This program seeks to engage exceptional, motivated students in a research experience that will endure throughout their lives.

Although the majority of time is dedicated to the host laboratory, students convene weekly for collaborative academic endeavors, frequently alongside participants from the sister program at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). These activities encompass introductory student research presentations, faculty lectures on research subjects and career trajectories, and career advising workshops in academia and other fields.

At the conclusion of summer, students showcase their research findings on a poster at a collaborative UNIL/EPFL symposium and compose a final report.

Students partake in various social activities, such as hiking in the Alps, barbecuing, swimming in Lake Geneva, and visiting other towns in Switzerland.

What is the SUR Program intended for?

The program targets students in biology, medicine, or a similar field, emphasizing biological sciences. Qualified candidates will have completed two years of their bachelor’s degree and will be entering their third year at the time of the program.

Previous research experience is not a factor for selection.

We generally define study in biology and medicine; nevertheless, applicants pursuing studies in physical therapy, nursing, dentistry, or veterinary science will be excluded from consideration.

The program is extremely difficult; candidates are selected based on their academic performance (generally a GPA over 3.75 or its equivalent and/or a ranking among the top 5% of their class), personal statements, and letters of recommendation.

Students must possess exceptional communication abilities in both written and spoken English.

Students are required to attend the whole program to participate. Due to organizational constraints, we are unable to alter the program’s date.

The SUR Program 2025 is scheduled from July 7 to August 28.

Chosen participants will receive notification via email around six weeks following the application deadline.
