Study in Sweden | Uppsala University Industrial Engineering Scholarship 2026

Are you prepared to join a clean-energy movement that might transform worldwide transportation? Uppsala University, renowned as one of Sweden’s top research establishments, is welcoming international candidates to submit applications for its PhD program in Industrial Engineering – Hydrogen Supply Systems.

Take advantage of this opportunity to explore the realm of zero-emission fuels, collaborate with leading industry experts, and play a role in the decarbonization of maritime transportation.

About the Opportunity

The role is based in the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering at Uppsala University Campus Gotland. This dynamic research setting emphasizes the application of hydrogen in the maritime and transport industries—creating systems that enable clean fuel technology to be feasible on a large scale. You will be part of a diverse team addressing one of the major issues of our time: achieving sustainable shipping.

Your contributions will be included in the project “Compressed Hydrogen in Marine Propulsion Systems: Temperature Changes and Structural Integrity of Onboard Components,” supported by Trafikverket. This project investigates the safe use of compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH₂) to power ships, addressing its intricate thermodynamic and material characteristics.

Your Research and Responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, you will participate in innovative research that merges engineering, physics, and sustainability studies. Main duties consist of:

  • Creating thermodynamic and time-variable simulations for hydrogen fueling and functioning on ships.
  • Performing material evaluations on composite vessels and steel pipes subjected to hydrogen and thermal strain.
  • Developing predictive models for weariness, brittleness, and system security.
  • Assessing thermal control approaches to improve energy efficiency in marine hydrogen systems.
  • You will also participate in doctoral classes, work with other universities and industry stakeholders, and may teach (up to 20% of your time).

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants are required to fulfill the admission criteria for PhD programs in Sweden, which include:

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, such as Industrial, Marine, Energy, Chemical Engineering, or a similar discipline.
  • Solid foundation in mathematics, thermodynamics, energy systems, and coding (Matlab or Python).
  • Outstanding proficiency in English communication.

Additional resources:

  • Familiarity with energy system modeling, CFD software, or hydrogen system assessment.
  • Demonstrated capability to engage in collaborations between academia and industry.

Work Atmosphere

The role is located at Campus Gotland in Visby, a distinctive research center that combines the strengths of a large university with the intimate environment of a smaller campus. The workplace fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation focused on sustainability.

Deadline for Applications

The final date for applications to the PhD program in Industrial Engineering – Hydrogen Supply Systems at Uppsala University is 10 November 2025 (22:59 UTC). Every application should contain your CV, transcripts, Master’s thesis, and letters of recommendation. Submit your application via the official recruitment portal of Uppsala University.

How to Apply

  • Join cutting-edge hydrogen research that is influencing worldwide sustainability
  • Collaborate closely with industry and global research partners
  • Directly aid in Europe’s environmentally friendly shift in shipping.
