Qualification

Applicants are required to:

  • Must be citizens of Singapore or hold Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) status.
  • Excellent consideration may be given to foreigners who are not Singapore Permanent Residents (SPRs) and have excellent track records. Non-Singaporeans must have acquired Singapore citizenship before the start of the fellowship.
  • Hold a recently obtained PhD degree within the past 4 years
  • Demonstrate outstanding publishing records
  • Do not have any current affiliations with any institution
  • You have either applied for or are in the process of applying for a post-doctoral position at a prestigious international university or laboratory.

For applicants applying for the Mid-Term AIF:

  • Embrace Singaporean nationality
  • At the time of applying for the scholarship, I was admitted to a prestigious international university or laboratory.
  • Demonstrate outstanding publishing records
  • The current university or lab supervisor must serve as one of the two academic reviewers.

Additional prerequisites:

  • Individuals who are in the last phase of their doctoral studies are eligible to apply for the AIF. Nevertheless, the confirmation of their AIF grant is contingent upon the conferment of their PhD degree.

The eligibility criteria mentioned above are not comprehensive.

A*STAR may incorporate supplementary selection criteria based on current scholarship standards. These policies are subject to periodic amendments without prior notification.

Extent or scope of protection or insurance provided.

Applicants who are accepted will get the following assistance* for a maximum duration of 2 years during their research training abroad:

  • Monthly stipend for living expenses abroad
  • Monthly stipend, including CPF contribution (where applicable)
  • Yearly round-trip airfare

Additional benefits, such as:

  • Relocation stipend
  • Computer stipend
  • Allowance for attending a conference
  • Yearly individual insurance coverage
  • Mid-term AIF recipients will get the same level of support as full-term AIF recipients, starting from the time they are awarded. They will also be reimbursed for any mandatory costs they have paid since the beginning of their training.

Procedure for Applying to A*Star International Fellowship:

Process of conducting an interview

Selected candidates will go through two rounds of interviews. Only those who have been selected for further consideration will receive notification regarding interview specifics.

Announcement of Results

Applicants who are selected for the second round will receive notification in December.

FAQ.

1. What is the processing time for my application?

The application processing period is a maximum of 5 months, starting from the date of submission of the complete application to the A*STAR Graduate Academy office, to the day when you receive notification of the application outcome.

2. What is the application deadline?

We handle applications for two enrollment periods. The deadline for February’s commencement is the 1st of October of the previous year, whereas the deadline for August’s start is the 1st of March of the current year.

3. Could you please provide details about the application and interview process?

Upon submission of all necessary documentation, your application will undergo a thorough examination. During this assessment process, you may be asked to provide more information. If you are selected as a potential candidate, you will receive an invitation to participate in a minimum of two interview rounds, and maybe additional tests if necessary.

Before the initial interview, you must obtain approval from your chosen A*STAR Research Institute supervisor and executive director. This approval is necessary for you to fulfill the 3-year service commitment at the selected research institute after completing the post-doctoral program under the AIF. You will have a total of 15 minutes during the initial interview round to present your intended research topic, and then there will be a 15-minute question-and-answer session.

4. I am currently located abroad. Is it possible for me to participate in the interviews via Skype?

Unless otherwise specified, all interviews for shortlisted applicants are performed online.
