It was instituted by Royal Decree No. 11 dated 25/3/1381 AH, succeeded by Royal Decree No. 21 dated 16/4/1381 AH, which sanctioned the framework of the university’s Supreme Advisory Council. Research commenced on Sunday, Jumada al-Akhirah 2, of the same year.

On 5/18/1386 AH, Royal Decree No. M/18 was promulgated, sanctioning the university system. A subsequent system for the university was promulgated by Royal Decree No. M/70 on 8/7/1395 AH.

Institutions of higher education

College of Shariah

The college was founded in the same year as the university, on the twenty-fifth of March in the year 1381 AH, by Royal Decree No. (11), which ratified the law of the Islamic University. The legislation of the Islamic University, as delineated in its seventh article, states that the university comprises two divisions: higher and secondary. The higher division serves as the initial nucleus of the college, which subsequently adopted the designation (College of Sharia). The study commenced on 2/6/1381 AH with an initial cohort of 85 students, and the current enrollment has surpassed 7,500 pupils.

College of Quran

The College of the Holy Qur’an and Islamic Studies is the inaugural institution of its type in the Islamic world, as no other entity save the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has previously established such a college, which mandates the complete memorization of the Holy Qur’an as a prerequisite for entrance.

It was formed by Royal Decree No. (26511) dated 6/9/1394 AH, during the auspicious month of Ramadan, after the advice of the Supreme Advisory Council of the university convened from 12/4/1394 AH to 20/4/1394 AH. On Monday, 6/10/1394 AH, 21 students commenced their studies, and the enrollment progressively rose, culminating in the graduation of a total of 1,524 students from 75 countries by 1435 AH / 1436 AH.

Institute of Noble Hadith and Islamic Studies

On 6/23/1396 AH, Royal Decree No. (15653) sanctioned the founding of the College of Hadith and Islamic Studies, which commenced instruction in two academic departments: Hadith Sciences and Sunnah Fiqh and its Sources. It focuses on educating global scholars in the Prophet’s Sunnah and its related subjects through distinguished professors, conferring bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
