Study in Portugal | Lusófona University in Lisbon Research Scholarship 2025

Lusófona University and the CERIS Research Centre in Lisbon, Portugal, are offering a fully funded research scholarship aimed at early-career researchers interested in the fields of civil infrastructure and machine learning. This opportunity is part of the project INTENT (Intelligent Health Monitoring of Road Infrastructures) and is supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT).

The scholarship is designed for enthusiastic individuals who are eager to contribute to innovative solutions for monitoring and maintaining road infrastructures. The project focuses on leveraging advanced machine learning techniques to enhance the health assessment of road systems, which plays a critical role in ensuring safety and efficiency within transportation networks.

As a recipient of this scholarship, you will have the chance to engage in cutting-edge research, collaborate with experts in the field, and contribute to significant advancements in infrastructure monitoring. The scholarship not only provides financial support but also offers a platform for professional development and networking within the academic and research community.

This could be a pivotal step in your academic career, particularly if you’re passionate about integrating technology and civil engineering to address real-world challenges. If you fit the profile of a motivated early-career researcher, this opportunity in the vibrant city of Lisbon might be perfect for you.

Program Summary

  • Project Title: Smart health oversight of transportation infrastructure utilizing Bender elements integrated within pavements (INTENT)
  • Host Institutions: Lusófona University (RISE) and CERIS Research Centre, Lisbon, Portugal
  • Contracting Entity: COFAC – Cooperativa de Formação e Animação Cultural CRL
  • Timeframe: 6 months (beginning September 2025), extendable up to 12 months.
  • Place of Employment: Lisbon, Portugal
  • Research Domain: Formal and Natural Sciences (emphasis on Civil and Structural Engineering)

Research Focus

  • Modeling the degradation of fatigue in granular layers of pavement
  • Creation of machine learning algorithms for the early identification of damage.
  • Development of a sophisticated toolkit for immediate data collection and prediction.

This innovative study will enhance road infrastructure sustainability by utilizing bender element technology to measure dynamic stiffness (shear modulus) in unbound granular pavement layers.

Benefits of Scholarships

  • Monthly Allowance: €1309.64 (rate for standard research fellowship from FCT)
  • Inclusion of Social Security Contribution
  • Chance to collaborate at two prestigious research centers in Lisbon.
  • Experience in international collaboration with organizations in Portugal, Spain, and the USA.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, you are required to:

1. Possess a Master’s degree in:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Or other pertinent related fields

2. Degree Validation: If your MSc isn’t yet acknowledged in Portugal, an expedited recognition process exists for degrees from the EU and certain countries (e.g., USA, UK, Brazil (CAPES 5+), Canada, Russia, Turkey, etc.).
