Eligibility criteria for the Mauritius Government Scholarship 2025 include:

  • A national of a nation within the African Union or the African Commonwealth. Age restrictions apply. Undergraduate (ages 18–25 as of January 1, 2026), MPhil/PhD (under 40 years as of January 1, 2026).
  • To obtain a diploma, degree, MPhil, or PhD, you must have applied to a full-time program at a public institution in Mauritius for the 2024 academic year.
  • PhD: Requires a first-class undergraduate degree or an MPhil that satisfies the criteria of the awarding institution.
  • PhD or MPhil: Applicants must possess an upper second-class undergraduate degree (or a GPA of no less than 60%), preferably accompanied by a master’s degree.
  • Schedule: Five credits at S.C., G.C.E. “O” Level, or IGCSE, including English, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Degree for undergraduates: A minimum of 21 points in GCE or HSC A-Level, an average of 60%, or an equivalent standard.

Regulations for Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme recipients traveling internationally during the Scholarship duration

1. Travel Protocols and Prerequisites

The scholarship includes a round-trip flight via the most economical route from the country of origin at the commencement of study and a return to the place of origin upon successful completion. The scholarship does not cover additional travel expenditures throughout the study year. Requests for supplementary funds will not be entertained.

Awardees must notify the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in writing via their respective project supervisor(s) at least two (2) weeks prior to any departure from Mauritius for whatever reason.

For data collection, they must notify the Ministry, HEC, and their Doctoral School/Faculty through their supervisor(s) at least two (2) months in advance.

Awardees will receive special leave from their institution for one day prior to or one day following the conference/seminar for participation purposes. They must notify the Ministry, HEC, and their Doctoral School/Faculty via their supervisor(s) at least two (2) months in advance.

2. Travel during the semester or end-of-year recess

The student shall not be eligible for reimbursement of any travel expenditures incurred during the semester or end-of-year break.

3. Traveling during the intersession

MASS winners are advised against traveling throughout the semester, since it may impede their academic advancement. Monthly living allowance will be calculated pro-rata depending on the number of days spent in Mauritius, except in circumstances of emergency travel (as specified in paragraph 4 below) or for sanctioned institutional exceptional leave.

4. Emergency Travel

Students who must immediately return to their home country for significant family affairs or illness will continue to receive the monthly payment, providing their stay abroad does not exceed 6 weeks.

5. Travel for data collection objectives

Awardees required to travel overseas for data gathering during the scholarship period will receive their complete monthly living stipend while outside Mauritius. This will be limited to a standard maximum duration of four to six months, maybe divided into two periods throughout the whole study duration, contingent upon formal approval from the supervisor and the institution.

All expenses related to this activity, including airfare, must be incurred by the student. The awardee must notify the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, and the Higher Education Commission, via the institution, of the travel dates two months prior.

6. Attending Seminars and Conferences

MPhil/PhD recipients may apply to participate and deliver papers at international seminars and conferences as a component of their studies. Any MASS awardee traveling internationally to participate in conferences, seminars, colloquiums, or symposiums must notify the HEC and the Ministry via their supervisor at least eight (8) weeks before the event.

  • The student will assume all expenses associated with attending the event.
  • The monthly living allowance will be provided for one day prior to and one day following the conference/seminar, and will not be disbursed beyond the sanctioned leave duration.
