The 2026 CWAJ Scholarship Program offers various funding options:
- CWAJ Scholarship for Japanese Women Graduates to Pursue Studies Overseas: Granted to Japanese women or special permanent residents studying for a graduate degree abroad in an English-language program. Financial support is 3.5 million yen
- CWAJ Cartier Award: One applicant from the Graduate Scholarship pool is chosen for this award, emphasizing entrepreneurship and community impact. Financial support is 3.5 million yen
- CWAJ Scholarship for Non-Japanese Women Pursuing Studies in Japan (NJG): Available to non-Japanese women living in Japan who are enrolled in a PhD program at a university in Japan. Financial Support is 2 million yen
- CWAJ Scholarships for Individuals with Visual Impairments: Open to visually impaired Japanese citizens or special permanent residents for education in Japan or overseas. Also, welcoming visually impaired women from outside Japan who are studying in Japan. Funding depends on the specific track
Eligibility Requirements
For Graduate Scholarships (Japanese and Cartier):
- Must be recognized as a woman and hold Japanese nationality or possess special permanent residency.
- Must live in Japan when applying.
- Must gain admission to a graduate program taught in English overseas for the 2026–2027 academic year.
- Should not have ever been awarded a CWAJ scholarship before.
- For the NJG Scholarship (Women from Non-Japanese Backgrounds):
- Must be a woman of non-Japanese nationality living in Japan.
- Must be registered in a PhD program at a Japanese university between April 2026 and March 2027.
- Cannot possess permanent residency or have previously received CWAJ funding.
For Scholarships for the Visually Impaired:
- Available for visually impaired applicants who are either Japanese citizens or non-Japanese females, based on the category.
- No limitations based on age or profession.
How to Apply
Submission Deadlines
- Graduate and NJG Grants: Application Window is July 1, 2025, to October 6, 2025 (22:00 JST)
- Scholarships for the Visually Impaired: Application Window is July 1, 2025, to November 7, 2025 (Friday).
- Scholarships with complete funding: Successful applicants will receive notification by March 2026, and the award ceremonies are anticipated to occur in May 2026
