Study In Japan: Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO) Scholarships 2024-2025

The Toshiba International Foundation (TIFO) is pleased to announce its award program for the fiscal year 2025, with applications commencing on October 1, 2024. The program’s objective is to provide assistance to projects that enhance global comprehension of Japan.

TIFO provides financial assistance, networking prospects, and a platform to exhibit pioneering initiatives that enhance Japan’s international reputation. Grant applicants will be provided with financial support to pay project expenses, including the costs of supplies, travel, and operations. In addition, students will have the opportunity to connect with a network of specialists and institutions dedicated to promoting international collaboration.

About TOSHIBA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION

The foundation was created in the year 1989, a year marked by significant and transformative events. In Japan, the Heisei Period began with the conclusion of the Showa period and the accession of a new emperor. The closure occurred in conjunction with the collapse of the Berlin Wall, a significant event that resulted in a profound transformation of the geographical boundaries of Europe and its surrounding regions. For numerous individuals, it was a year that marked the beginning of a new age and brought forth fresh aspirations.

During the 1980s, Japan experienced a period of rapid economic expansion, primarily driven by its export sectors. However, the success also resulted in significant trade disputes and harsh criticism. As a result, we saw the urgent necessity to present a comprehensive view of our nation, encompassing not just our technological and economic accomplishments, but also the richness of our culture and distinctive social structures. TIFO was founded with a clear objective: to enrich comprehension of Japan.

Primary Objective

Initially, TIFO primarily concentrated on organizing international symposia, partnering with renowned museums abroad for special exhibitions, contributing books on Japanese studies to university libraries overseas, and providing internships in Japan for students from Europe, the US, and Asia.

Since then, the range of our activities has broadened, and currently, our primary focus is on two main pillars. Our organization provides financial assistance through grant giving to support symposia hosted by international educational institutions, academic societies, and think tanks. Additionally, we fund events at museums worldwide that exhibit Japanese culture, research projects focused on Japan, and initiatives aimed at developing human resources. TIFO’s self-initiated activities aim to foster an appreciation for Japan among future leaders and stimulate study and publications on the country.

Over the past three decades since its establishment, TIFO has witnessed significant global transformations, including shifts within Japanese culture. Consequently, the imperative for fostering mutual comprehension and reliance between nations and regions has been more pronounced than ever before. In light of this, we consistently evaluate the most effective methods to accomplish our fundamental objective and key themes. We are dedicated to upholding a transparent position and to evaluating and experimenting with fresh viewpoints and methodologies. By engaging in our endeavors, we shall persistently enhance the advancement of the global community.
